Antibiotics- help

ONe of my molars which was filled last year (a deep large filling- almost to bone) has started hurting me in the past month. So I went to the dentist yesterday. An x-ray showed that the roots are infected (or could they just be inflamed?). Also all my symptoms- pain, sensitivity, spongy tooth, headaches, sore jaw- point to an infection, at least according to dentist. The pain is ok though as long as I do not eat on that side. The gum around it is healthy. I am getting a root canel (I do not want an extraction as it is a front molar) on June 10th. In the meantime he prescribed antibiotics for me.
But do I really NEED to take them? Is there something else I can do instead?

BTW, I am EBF my month old ds.

Abx help it from flaring up in the meantime and to prevent an abcess. If you do get an abcess, you could be harder to numb.
