Food poisoning while pregnant?

Hi, I was hoping someone could offer some insight because I did something really dumb yesterday and now I'm worried about it.

For lunch yesterday, I had some BBQ pork that had been out of the fridge for too long. I had a little voice in the back of my head telling me not to, but then I went and did it anyway. This morning after I had been up for a little while, I started to feel really nauseous. That is all it has been so far, I kind of feel like throwing up but it hasn't got to that point yet. I had NO morning sickness during the course of this pregnancy so this is a new feeling for me.

Now I'm really worried about the baby, of course! I could just kick myself for doing something so stupid. I am drinking water, and I had an apple on my way to work. Is there anything else I could do? Should I contact my MW?

I know this sounds weird... but try convincing yourself you aren't sick. It really could simply be that you were so worried that you would get sick, you are making yourself feel that way.

Ive done it to myself several times

I'm not sure there's anything you can do now, but on a reassuring note, I think the pregnant body is just excellent at getting rid of iffy items. At least mine has been. I would honestly think that if you haven't been sick yet, you are likely just fine.

Once you've eaten bad food, if you're going to get sick, you can't prevent it. Best to let the food leave your body.

I've only had food poisoning once, that I know of. I was 6 months pg with DD1 and had Coldstone cake batter ice cream - after they changed the recipe because it was causing food poisoning.

I ate it after lunch on a Sunday and by that evening wasn't feeling very good. I woke up at 1am with severe cramping and vomiting. It lasted for about 3 hours, then I had the runs for the whole rest of the day.

I used to be serve-safe food sanitation certified, but it was years ago. From what I remember, symptoms typically show up 8-48 hours after ingestion, although it can vary, obviously, depending on the food and severity.

Thanks for the responses. I just threw up a little while ago, I am hoping that will make me start feeling better. If not, I'm going home to bed. My MW sent me an email that it probably won't hurt the baby, just make me miserable.

Lesson learned.

My husband and I both had food poisoning from bad Chinese last week. It sucked on an epic scale, but other than that, my midwife assured me that there was very little risk to the baby. Sorry you're feeling off.

I've had slight food poisoning with each pregnancy, and neither time was the nurse when I called in very worried. And everything turned out fine. It was slight food poisoning (the runs and feeling crappy), not like Giardia or anything. Just make sure you relax and have water.

yeah... water is a big deal! very important to stay hydrated if you are sick.

I have had food poisoning twice while pg. It never caused me a problem with the baby and both were born perfectly healthy.

Sorry you got sick, but I would not worry.

Longtallanimal I hope you are feeling better today.

I have food poisoning symptoms as of maybe 4 hrs ago. Sucks! I felt MUCH better after vomiting and now it's the runs. Lesson learned: you must reheat spicy green curry thai take out WELL, not to lukewarm. I find I am sipping liquids with caution as it still makes me feel queasy. This will pass.

Wise Mamas, I am 25 wks PG, and tomorrow I am home from work with my very active 5 y.o. and 2 y.o. Dh has to work and my mom who normally babysits, is unavailable. Any words of wisdom (or support or commiseration) on coping and getting through the day? UGH. Parenting wee ones while being tummy-sick is a special circle of hell. Sorry OP to hijack, just coming onto MDC to post about the same thing!
