What do you do with your crawling co-sleeper for naps?

For about 2 months, we've been able to put DD in her crib (which is sidecarred) for naps and at night, before we go up to bed. I know she's up when I hear her playing with the monitor. Well, yesterday, she didn't make a peep until she crawled off the bed. She's been crawling for awhile, but it's never happened before.

I'm not sure what to do with her for naps now. Put the side back on the crib? I guess I could put it on during the day and take it off at night, but that's a lot to do. Mattress on the floor? What do you mamas with adventurous crawling co-sleepers do?

We made a barrier wall of pillows and bought a video monitor. Also we taught ds how to get off the bed safely. We've never had an incident.

DD naps on a mattress in her room (or my lap). I use a monitor for bedtime if she goes to sleep before us in our bed. I've taught her to get off the bed, but she's still iffy at it.

Thanks!

I put her mattress on the floor for her naps today, and will go with the pillow barrier this evening (she doesn't wake between the time she goes to bed and when I go to bed anyhow, but just in case). I'm not sure she's ready to learn to get off the bed safely, so maybe a video monitor would be a good investment for now.

Pillow barrier plus video monitor! I find that my son often wakes up and starts moving around before he makes noise, so I really like having the visual aspect going.

I put my crawling son in the sidecar crib even after he was crawling. He crawled off the bed once or twice but I figured he'd learn eventually. And he did: the third time, he lowered himself carefully down, legs first.

I also put noisy jangly toys in the crib. When he woke up, he'd go for those first, and I could hear him right away.

Now that he's a walker we sleep on a futon on the floor.

fireHC11 - Can I ask how old your LO was when he could lower himself off the bed? I would love to teach DD to do this, but I'm not sure she's old enough to get it (she'll be 10 months this weekend). I'll try the noisy toys, too - thank you!

When DS learned to crawl I put the mattress on the floor, made a pillow barrier and showed him how to lower himself off the bed. He picked up on it really quickly!

We have a very high bed, so falling/crawling off was traumatic for DD, and not something she could do by herself until she was much older. We'd been using a co-sleeper up until that point, and then switched to a low crib for naps, and sleeping the bed with a Tres Tria pillow with us at night.

Hmmm. He did it a few times when he was about 11 months old, but he hasn't done it since we moved him to the futon on the floor. I guess he forgot how.

Both of mine loved to nap on my back, so they did that a lot. I also got very good at making a little nest on the floor. Or, there is the join them in a nap option...

Well, today my LO crawled off the bed. It's a 5" box spring and a 9" mattress so not TOO far of a drop, but still... I guess we are going to put the 4th side back on her crib. I had a pillow wall + the monitor on loudly, and I still didn't hear her.

On the other hand, she probably learned something! :-)

My guy crawled off the bed once, and he never did it again.

Of course, we ramped up security, too.

Don't blame yourself, mama. It happens to all of us.

Big thank you to the mamas who suggested teaching her how to get down safely - it worked! DD figured it out quickly. Now she keeps asking to be lifted onto the bed or couch so she can practice getting down.
