Nestle Product Verification?

I've been boycotting nestle for years now, and my SIL recently came around and saw the light as well.

I'm aware that Nestle owns other brands, but thought I was well enough aware of what brands to avoid. One of the few "junk food" things we regularly buy is honey-nut cheerioes -- sometimes the store brand, but sometimes the "real" stuff when it's on sale.

SIL informed me that they were actually Nestle -- General Mills is a Nestle company. I hadn't looked it up to confirm, but just today I was looking at the wikipedia entry on Nestle brands http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nestl%C3%A9_brands

It lists Honey-Nut (and other) Cheerios, OUTSIDE of US and Canada.

Does that mean that in Canada, they're "safe"? Can someone confirm that this is accurate? I don't see "General Mills" on this list. Quick googling finds mentions from a few years ago about a suspected buyout, but I can't find confirmation. Is there a more up-to-date comprehensive list somewhere?

Also, it has a whole section for "Wonka confectionery brands (no longer available)". Huh? I can get half those treats at our corner store... and the grocery stores... I see them all the time. I don't buy them, because I knew that Wonka was Nestle. But "No longer available?"

Take a peek for yourself, it's endless what they have their hand in.
You can see everything they are involved in.

Oy, I think there are a few new names since I last checked (LLL conference in Germany, September 2008). Most of the items I don't buy anyway but the water and cosmetics can be tricky around here. I can't really read Chinese labels and all the "Western stuff" you get here is very mainstream (read: big name brand).

I just read that list...

Does this mean that the cat litter my dogs use is a Nestle product because it's owned by Purina? Seriously? This is the first time that the Nestle boycott has felt seriously inconvenient.

Yup. If you are in the US or Canada (not sure about elsewhere) Purina = Nestle.
