Sleep regression at 4 months?

I'm thinking ds is probably hitting a developmental milestone or possibly teething (a bit of drooling and fussiness going on too). Our sleep has been completely erratic the last week or so. He had a cold a week ago but the sleep is actually worse since he is feeling better.
We co-sleep and ds has always been waking between 1.5-3 hours. Occasionally we got a 4 hour stretch (pretty rare though). I've always thought he seemed to be a light sleeper but I wasn't ready to have him sleep anywhere but our bed yet. But last night I really couldn't sleep and it seemed that everytime dh moved around, or me for that matter, ds was waking up. We were up about every 1 to 1.5 hours and he's nursing every time.
I seem to be going back and forth about co-sleeping with him. We co-slept with our first out of necessity, horribly sleeper. I didn't really love it, but it was the best arrangement for him and us. I really like having ds 2 in our bed too, but I still find myself searching for cribs online......like I'm not quite settled with the decision. I think we just need a bigger sleep space and I need to decide whether that will be a crib or a bigger family bed...... Plus I realize the crib may or may not help with his sleep patterns and so I don't want to spend the money on getting one and finding we don't use it.

at this age i don't think they've quite hit their "bedtime routine" stage yet, i think it still takes a couple of months to have a normal schedule. plsu at this age they are teething a lot and their sleep habits change often. have you tried a side cosleeper? that would give you more space in bed, but let DS be close to you to nurse whenver you needed to. or try swaddling and rocking to sleep. i think at this stage they'll still wake up at least 3 times/night, but even getting a side cosleeper could help your sleep habits.

I've been inclined to think the same thing, that he's not quite found his sleeping groove and that all sorts of developmental changes could be going on. I would use a co-sleeper if I had one, but it's kind of a money thing. I could spend money on a crib, co-sleeper, or a twin bed. But we don't really have the funds for more than one of those.
He had a good week of sleep and I thought we'd moved on, but then the last couple were pretty rough again. Normally he will take his pacifier after nursing but last night he wouldn't and wanted to nurse back to sleep after every little waking. I finally was so tired and ended up needing to rock him in arms back to sleep and decided to put him in his bassinet in the other room. He slept for 3 hours!! He's done that before quite often but not lately. Of course I couldn't fall back to sleep for an hour because I was so worried about him.
I think I've decided on the twin bed because I really do like having him close and I know he won't be done waking at night to nurse. I just have a month or so before we'll have the money to get one and so I guess we'll see how the next several weeks go.

Yeah, the 4 month sleep regression sucks! Even worse - the 9 month one!

Yep. I remember the 4 month sleep regression and we are just getting through the 9 month sleep regression. They do eventually get back into a better pattern of sleeping; you just have to kind of ride it out.
