newborn disposable diapers ??

DDDC - but I figured all of you moms with your adorable newborns were the perfect ones to ask!!

I want to have some disposables for the meconium before switching to cloth...but since I want the umbilical dip I will need to buy Newborn. I have big babies in the 9 lb range, so in the past, Newborn diapers could be a tight fit! My 9lb 13oz really did not fit into hers - and I'm having a boy this time so he may be that big or bigger.

So...can you tell me what type is the stretchiest and/or fits largest to fit my bigger newborn-to-arrive best? Here I believe we have Pampers Swaddlers, Pampers Sensitive, Huggies, & Huggies Naturals for newborn options. In the past I think Pampers had stretchier sides but I know these things change quickly as they revamp product!

Since I won't need more than 1 package, I don't want to waste $$ on something that may not fit! Thanks so much and congrats to all the new mamas!!!

FWIW, last time I went w/disposables b/c of mec. This time I decided to use my cloth exclusively (no sposies yet!! 10 days out! This is big for me - we used disposables at night for both the others) and the mec washed off really easily. It wasn't a big deal at all...

Not really an answer for your question, but still. i'd encourage you to go with the cloth

My experience with sposies says it'll depend on the baby how the fit works. Huggies were HORRIBLE on dd as a newborn. Just TERRIBLE... she pooped or peed out every.single.time, so we used pampers... but there was consistent poo blow outs with those, too... same w/ds...

Mec washed easily here too.

For disposables you can always fold over the top and fasten the diaper to the folded over part, that way you can still use a size 1, but not have the belly button to be issue.

We have Huggies NB at work and Pampers size 1- odd, huh? You'd think we'd stick with the same brand...

Anyway, the "cord dip" thing really isn't that big of a deal. As a PP said, we just fold it under. Even with the NB size we end up folding it under a bit for a better fit.

I'm going with disposable right after birth too, then switching to cloth. I bought Seventh Generation size 1 diapers- my DD was 10lbs, 8.5oz so I figured buying NB size was silly (although I am hopeful for a smaller baby! ) I hate the smell of the Huggies and Pampers!

I used soft paper towels as liners during the meconium days. Very easy, but at times I was too lazy to grab a new paper towel and used just cloth. The meconium washed out easily.

I'm glad I didn't buy any sposies as my DD is tiny and has no butt!

we used cloth from birth with my DS, no mec washing probelms. Super easy.

We bought disposables for mec too and they leaked so horribly the first night that I switched to cloth and never looked back lol. The meconium washed easily, and the cloth diapers hold pee and poo way better than the disposables did. I seem to remember the same thing with DD1 too. We have only tried some of the more natural ones though (7th Gen, Tushies, etc) so the more mainstream brands may be better.

We used Pampers Swaddlers in the hospital and for 2 weeks at home. We folded the front down to avoid the umbilical stup and had no issues. No blowouts either but I would have preferred the sensitive kind. The store was out of them so we never got a chance to try. I just bought a back-up box of the huggies natural and have not used them yet.

I would buy stage 1 in any diap bc of your baby's size You'll also have extras for longer.

Best of luck

With my last two we CD'd from the get-go and had no problems w/ mec. at all. Even if you get some staining, it will likely sun out.

I am using Huggies NB. I just bought one package, since I didn't want to have one more thing to wash for that first week. I am looking forward to switching to cloth, though, since I really don't like the disposables. I've never used pampers, because I can't get past the perfumes in them. FWIW, the huggies NB fit my 9 lb DS2 for about 10 days, and then we went into size 1 or cloth (depending on who was changing him, lol). This baby is only 6.14, so I'm sure she could wear the NB dipes for a lot longer.

I don't know if your nose is as sensitive to smells when preg/postpartum as mine, but I can not be in the same room as Pampers swaddlers. They are stinky! The huggies nb are unscented, but pretty small. I am dying to switch to cloth, but none of my covers fit yet.

I'm off the the thrift store for old sweaters and to the yarn store now.

We use cloth and the mec was so easy to clean.
I bought some kushies liners to use, but wound up not using them.

We have sposies that I'm taking on vacation (since I won't have access to laundry) and my little guy is 10.5 lbs at a month (was 9.10 at birth) and still fits very well in the newborn Huggies dipes. The Swaddlers are a tight fit, those we would need a 1 in (though THOSE seem a little TOO big), but the Huggies work best IMO...even though I like how soft the Swaddlers are.

Get size 1 and fold it down under the umbilical cord. My ds was on the bigger end (not as big as yours but much bigger than his older siblings!) and when he outgrew the NB size but still had his cord on, we just folded it all down and it worked wonderfully!

We used both Pampers and Huggies NB size (hosptial had and gave us Pampers, I prefer Huggies) and the Huggies lasted longer.

Thanks so much to everyone for your experiences and advice!! I still think that I will go with a small pack of the newborn diapers and just make sure to get the Huggies since they fit longer. I don't know why, but I love the umbilical dip!! 1babysmom, were you using the Huggies Supreme or Huggies Natural?

Uh, whatever the regular ones in the red pack are. I'm too cheap for the natural ones.
