White vinegar in homemade cleaners

I'm not sure where to post this. I remember there being a "Green Living" forum, but maybe I was imagining it?
Anyway, I have "recipes" for homemade cleaners calling for white vinegar. I was wondering if it's possible/"okay" to replace it with ACV or some other vinegar since I don't keep white vinegar in the house?
TIA!

I would assume you could (I wouldn't put it in the laundry though, especially if it's good ACV with mother chunks), but I wouldn't for the sole fact that a 2L jug of white vinegar can be purchased for like $1.75 and last for upwards of 6 mos whereas ACV is expensive!

I get a huge bottle of white vinegar at Costco and it lasts me forever and is cheap to boot. I definitely wouldn't use good ACV this way...too expensive!

I'd second eirual - you could but not if there's mother in it. Like both the other posters we get the 2L jug from costco and use it everywhere in the house. Its like $1.75 to $2 and easily lasts for a month with what we use it for (Laundry, cleaners, bathroom toliets, windows, etc.)

Oh there was a "Green Living" forum but the mods rolled it into "Mindful home"

I keep reading that ACV stains anyway, so white is recommended. I always keep a big jug under the sink for random things (like stinky dishwasher!). It's cheap and good for lots and lasts for a very long time!!

Ok, well the reason I'm asking is that I have a son with a wheat allergy who reacts to white vinegar- including simply by inhalation. For example, I used the last of it (a year or more ago) to clear a clog in the kitchen sink and he came into the room about 15 minutes following and we had meltdown after meltdown about minor issues for 2 days following (including getting 3 phone calls home from school re: his behaviour). So, obviously white vinegar is not going to work for us.
So, if the concern with ACV is that it stains, I could probably use it (since it's less expensive than my other options) for things where staining isn't much of a concern (don't ask me what that might be right now ) and maybe rice vinegar for those things where it is?

Ooh...that is a pain. Bleh. Sounds like you've figured out a plan though. Interested to hear what the other replies come up with.

OH! I just missed that whole part in your post. Does your son react with ACV? I'm assuming not if you are planing to use it, you could strain out the mother (if it has it in it) or just buy the cheap-o ACV which doesn't have any mother in it from the supermarket in the bigger size.

I think the only concern about staining is if you use ACV with mother still in it as the mother will stain anything.

ETA: Other ideas - Lemon Juice or really anything with a mild acid in it can work. Note I said mild acid - nothing heavy duty at all

As per the forum guidelines, I am moving this out to The Mindful Home.
