So, whatcha worrying or jumping for joy about this week?

In regards to hsing, that is?

My worry of the week is that ds will never learn basic math and I'm utterly confused about whether or not I've chosen the right LA for him, atm.

I'm jumping for joy that dd wrote a hilarious paper describing her cell phone cover. She has anxiety surrounding writing, and she is coming along nicely.

How about at your home?

Worry is my son doesn't know his multiplication like he should However it's only a few of the facts. Quite a few numbers he has down. We've started playing some type of game every day after school with flash cards or wrap ups or other things I've found.

My plan is to work on it over the summer casually just to reinforce everything.

Jumping for joy that he's finding things he wants to research on his own. He finds stacks of books at the library each time we go. He comes home and pours over them which of course does my heart good!

Cool! That's my "worry" plan also!

Isn't it such a HUGE relief to witness dc discover their interests?? You're right, it IS good for a momma's heart!!

Well let's see. My worry is that my 6th grader hasn't had enough instruction in writing, & I'm at a loss how to teach it/what curriculum to use....

But jumping for joy over how great he's done in his other subjects this yr, and that every yr my record keeping gets better & better, AND that my 4 yr old has just taken off with his learning! I'm having so much fun with him!

my "worry" this week has been with my daughter's writing skills. i feel like she has the ability to be better than she is, and the only thing keeping her from reaching that potential is ...ME! but...i felt like this with handwriting, math, reading, etc. - so i'm pray that "this too shall pass".

my "joy" is the awesome weather!! it's in the mid 70's here & it reminds me of why we love homeschooling so much! we also picked up chicken eggs on tuesday, and i can't wait to see them hatch

I'm not worried about anything at the moment, but I am super-excited that we just got a library discard set of World Book encyclopedias yesterday.

My daughter insisted on having them for bedtime reading ("Tiger," "Impala," and "Insect") last night, and was very annoyed when I told her we had to stop so she could go to sleep!

I'm worrying a little bit about DD (almost 5) not having enough time with other kids. She's an only child, with no cousins, and no kids in the neighborhood (horrible school district) But I know with warm weather coming we'll be able to spend time at the park every day which will help me get over that worry.

Joy this week is over how well she's understanding time, both telling time and recognizing how much time has passed. Also excited about how quickly she's able to pick up song lyrics and how well she's singing. (I can't carry a tune)

As always the joys far outweigh the worries this week!

My worry is that ds1 wants to go to school this fall, and it has me in a tizzy!

My joy this week is that we started cursive handwriting, at his request, and he is so happy about it. He has done nothing for two days but practice his cursive, even carrying around his notebook to show to people at the park! I spent a lot of time obsessing over the horrible state of his handwriting, so this is a really new experience for me!

I completely understand! Here's what I tried with my 13yo dd-
unschooling
Ruth Beechick approach in early yrs.
Writing Strands
Bravewriter
And ended up with Write Shop-which is what works for us so far-or shall I say has lasted the longest! My dd is super sensitive to criticism and somewhere along the way developed what would be writer's phobia. She wrote not one thing her 5th and 6th grade years. The odd thing, is that she is a total bookworm, and I just expected that since she was introduced to and engaged with quality literature, writing would come naturally and easily. Nope. Not so. It's been hard. She is a total perfectionist, and just couldn't deal with producing a less than perfect piece of writing. Oh well-I'm not stressing about it so much, just taking babysteps with WS, and embracing her strengths, which are math and science.

Your dd is still so young, so I bet it most likely *will* pass.

That's so cool you got chickies!!

Is your dd very outgoing? I found hsing my ds was easier in that regard as he is more of a shy dc-until this year when he turned 8. Now he is all about wanting to play with more dc-specifically boys. I do understand your worry, though. This is the first year that I *really* committed to hsing. Every other year I've gone by the "let's just take it year by year attitude" and I have really had to push myself outside my comfort zone to create/develop a social circle for both the dc and myself. My efforts this year have been great and it's paid off. I won't lie though, I've had many days of doubt/worry when the weather was bad or we(and everyone else) were battling illness and went for weeks w/o social contact. That IS really, really tough!

Your joy is awesome!! My dd is very, very musical and I cannot sing at all. There is nothing so sweet as a 5yo singing her heart out!! Very cool.

Joy of the week - my dd completed Horizons Math K (book 1)!!!
Worry of the week - how to make Book 2 not be "baby math" as well.

I'll jump in here ~ Hi everyone!

Current Worry: dd is still writing some of her letters and numbers backwards ... this seems to be happening mostly when she is tired of writing though, but still ...we've started using Handwriting Without Tears this semester and she really likes it so we'll keep on keepin' on I guess

Current Joy: she LOVES math and doesn't seem to have inherited any of my hang-ups about it (something I've been worried about, but am learning to enjoy math for the first time as I'm teaching it). We're doing a Math main lesson block right now and we've having a terrific time!

Not worried per-say, but more wondering and having trouble letting go of "when is she going to READ independently?" She has all the basics and has for most of this year. She will read out loud to me (Frog and Toad level), and is finally ditching some of her ps-k induced writing anxiety (they wanted three complete sentences from a kindy EVERY NIGHT for hmwk, and she is just now comfortable enough with "free writing" to do 1-3 happily and independently). So she's "on track", but when is she going to just pick up a book for fun and actually read the words to herself? She "reads" frequently but is skimming and looking at pictures. So that's my most recent quandary.

My hs joy? I feel confident that she would test out at end-of-first grade level (or above) right now in the 3 Rs, and so everything else that we do from now til Summer has this feeling of being "frosting" which makes me feel really relaxed about homeschooling.

I'm also really impressed with how things are going in foreign languages (we're actually doing Latin and Greek). In about 5-20 minutes 3-4 days a week of children's books/magnet letters/dry erase board, she is totally walking around saying Latin words or recognizing shapes of Greek letters in her everyday life. Cool! And it hasn't been dry or inappropriate to her age. So I am really happy that the FLAs are going as swimmingly as I had hoped. Weird that the classic languages are way easier for me to facilitate than when we were doing Spanish and ASL--I crashed and burned "teaching" those; I don't know why.

Also really digging the Montessori three-part lesson. I've been applying it to EVERYTHING, and I think it is pure genius of a method. Probably part of why the foreign langs are going so well. Simple and effective!

My worry this week is that I am not doing enough "sit down schooling" with my six year old.
My joy this week is that we were able to have a long engaging lesson/discussion on muscles and the different bodies that animals have.

Worrying: My 4yo is not yet reading. Yes, I know that's normal for most kids, but all my others read before 4.

Jumping for joy: My 8yo has his first set of SBAs (Standardized testing) on the 6th of April. He's "officially" in 3rd grade and I accidentally printed out the 4th grade math test, which he looked at, sailed through, and only missed one question (about types of triangles). Then we printed out the 3rd grade math test, and it's incredibly simple. So he's very excited about testing (they get snacks! ) and I'm relieved.

Jumping for joy because we only technically have 18 days left of school to appease the state!

Worrying because I bought $130 worth of curriculum from someone two weeks ago and it still isn't here and she hasn't answered my latest email form three days ago.

Oh goodness! I'd be a mess! I'm sending good getting your package vibes. Hopefully it is just one of those unavoidable things, an illness(not that I'd wish that on anybody, but...ykwim), unplanned visitors, etc, delaying things.

My worry is what to do for math next year for my oldest and how to get him writing more.

My second worry is that we seem to be way overbooked lately and I need to pare down - just having trouble figuring out what can get chucked and then keeping that space clear.

My joy was how much fun my kids had lately with their lego projects. My youngest 3 just did their big presentation of their JFLL project and were thrilled. We still have a few more presentations to make and we have a team resource blog which you can see here.
And my oldest worked on a Mindstorm challenge with some friends and they were 1st on the first day and came in 5th overall against a group of high school students. We had the team wrap up party this week and his team is already thinking of things to do to keep working together over the summer - which is great.

Joy of the week: the Times Tales program! My dd is memorizing the harder multiplication facts in no time at all.

Worry of the week (actually, my perpetual worry): I have such a hard time keeping the house in decent shape so that we have the time and space to pursue all of our interesting learning ideas.

*Lisa*, Just a hug and an "I understand" from another hs mom (of many).

My husband likes to trot out the old, 'We work here, we play here, we learn here, WE LIVE HERE.' phrase. I'm so happy that he's okay with the chaos (and he's REALLY a clean freak). I mean, my larger goal is to create a love of learning, not a daily roster of chores. So my house is strewn sometimes with chemistry sets, various books, (ok, it's *always* strewn with books), with needlefelting, sewing, painting, architecture, you-name-it.

I wish I'd grown up in a messy love-to-learn house rather than one my mom bleached every Monday and where we were told we'd learned at school and needed to now go outside and play!

love, p
