So, whatcha worrying or jumping for joy about this week? - Page 2

My joy for the week is dd(5) is finally interested in handwriting!! She's actually been asking to do 3-4 handwriting worksheets daily as soon as we start "school"!

My jot of the week is that we finished 2nd grade language on Time4Learning. My worry is that DS still doesn't do much handwriting. It is more of a punishment than something he wants to do.

Worry: That DS11 will never get his internal motivation to work hard at something, to do his best, simply because he wants to do well and because something must be done. That he will settle for 'meh, good enough, time to go play' in everything.

Joy: That after years of being a 'slow' and 'reluctant' writer, where all our efforts at creative writing have resulted in utterly simplistic works, after him never having truly put together a proper paragraph, after his summaries always being too brief, too random, too sketchy... After finally accepting that it wasn't worth pushing at this point in time and not doing anything formal writing-wise, and moving to drawing his summaries with minimal writing expected... But still that nagging worry...

After all that, this past week he announced he wanted to write a novel. He said he noticed that the novel he'd been reading most recently (slow writer, advanced reader) had a lot of descriptive language, and it inspired him to want to do that. Of course, he's read lots of descriptive language before, but this time he NOTICED it.

So far he's only added about a paragraph each day, but heaven's sake, it's GOOD! I mean, it's not Eragon, it's not the next homeschooled-kid-miracle-novel. But it's coherent, it's fleshed out, it has sentences like "the rain from the previous night glistened on the green grass"!!!

Now that she's had her glasses for a couple of months, DD (5.5 years) is flying ahead with reading. It's been so wonderful.

But, she broke her arm 1.5 weeks ago, requiring surgery, and that was pretty much horrible. We're progressing, though, and learning a lot about bones! She asked to do some school work this weekend and we spent a bunch of time reading and spelling.

I hear her reading DH a book right now.

Have you tried alternative ways of writing--- such as dry erase boards or writing in shaving cream/pudding/flour?

We're constantly revising our plan on this. I always feel as if I have to do everything-- even if I'm not-- and this just isn't helpful.

Right now we're working on lists/charts so that we know who needs to do what and it is more-- to use a kid word-- FAIR. So I do laundry, husband folds it. He does the dishes and I sweep and clean the table and we switch off.

He also made a "checklist" for the kids each day-- their messes are CRAZY. He's a scientist and they have those at work to make sure everything is fixed.... so we're trying it here.

Would you be willing to share the checklist? I'd love to see that! It might be really helpful around here.
