DS peed on the potty! - making training pants

My DS voluntarily peed on the potty today! With no prompting! He just stopped and said "oh, pee pee!" and ran into the bathroom, sat down, and went. He was diaperless at the time, we usually let him "air out" :LOL for an hour or two in the am. We did a happy dance afterwards, he was so proud of himself.
Before today, he only went when we suggested it.

Back on topic, I'm thinking of making him some training pants, the pull up kind.
Maybe I'll buy some tiny underwear and use them as a pattern. Does that sound like it would work?

I was thinking a layer of pul on the outside, with alyer of micro on the inside, alayer of flannel in between and a small one layer hemp soaker. Too thick? Too absorbent? Not enough?
I'd love to hear your opinions on this before I start. I already have the fabric I need.

To be honest, when it was time to PT we just used the thick underwear for the older two. For the youngest, who PTd on his own at 25mo he picked out blues clues underwear and never looked back. My oldest would pee on the potty when left naked from about 18mo onward, but didn't figure out to go to the potty with clothes/underwear (and take them off) on until about 26mo.

I should say that my children do stay home. If they'd been in daycare or something we might've tried something different.

Is there a reason to make training pants vs just going to thick (or even regular) underwear? (not trying to be rude, just asking

Virg

ETA: congrats on the potty success!!!

I would probably make them just like regular undies except for adding a little soaker in the crotch. I wouldn't bother w/ fleece and PUL, unless you are going out.

Congrats on the PT!

If they are going out pants, the pul layer is a good idea, but don't use micro inside because it defeats the purpose of being training pants if he can't feel the wetness. In my training pants, I use 2 layers of terry (some time BKT sometimes hemp) for the soakers, plus 2 layers of cotton batting to make the crotch more comfy and for fast absorption.

I just read that the pattern for Knit Knickers training pants from Country Cozy is available to purchase. I saw the info on another board... not sure if I can post the link, so if you want the info, pm me.

happy dance indeed!

as for how to make them...I dunno?

I would think a thick soaker layer would be the main thing. Maybe you could even serge some hemp fleece or towel terry and then stich it into a pre made pair? Not sure if that would be too bulky, though?

Thanks for the input! DS has lost interest in the potty again though. : From his general attitude, I imagine he'll make more progress soon, though. SO, I have a little time to do some more planning and research on tp.
