Little Red Bumps...

Yesterday my LO broke out with a little rash on her belly and chest. The bumps are little, red, hard bumps, they are not in patches, just sporatic. There doesn't really seem to be any irritation (they don't seem to hurt or itch).

I was thinking it could be an allergy to something new she has eaten? We are not very careful about what she eats, we have no family history of food allergies, maybe not the best move? We have stayed away from nuts and shellfish.

Maybe heat rash? She runs super hot, no fevers, but heat literally radiates from her head like a space heater.

Any other ideas? If she doesn't have a fever, she is still nursing well etc. do you think we need to see a doctor?

thanks all!

When DS gets this it's in reaction to dairy. Of course, it's accompanied by fussy behavior as well...

That's the strange thing, there is really no difference in her personality? She is still pretty happy go lucky.

Little dd just had this last week. I used OTC hydrocortisone and clotrimazole (small amount twice daily) and it cleared up.I told myself that if that didn't help, I'd go in to have it looked at...but, thankfully, that did the trick in about 2 days.

We had that; it was heat rash. I asked the dr. about it at a WBC, and he confirmed it. It takes a few days to go away. I put some cream on it, just in case it was itchy. It never bothered my son.

I thought about it later...my DH runs hot like that (and so does DS...I guess it's genetic) Once DH got a horrible fever. Like, so hot that if I'd known (it was the middle of the night) I would have forced him into a cold bath. Anyway, he got a heat rash on his inner thighs just from his own body heat.

Google: Prickly Heat (I think) and see if that's the rash you have.

Do the spots blanch (turn white/go away) when lightly pressed? Our LO has had something similar it sounds like, and our doctor told us it was a viral rash. But then again, rashes can be from any number of things...

I tried hydrocortisone it seems it may be clearing. She still has some, but they seem to be less this morning.
thanks!

I think it may be heat rash. It has gotten cooler and they seem to be going away, but we did put hydrocortisone on the rash, so that may have helped as well.

DH runs hot as well, it MUST be genetic.

I googled prickly heat, but only very severe cases really showed up. Also, the bumps seemed a lot more red to me. It may be a very slight case.

No, the bumps are actually not large enough to push down and see anything. They are hard and tiny, it feels like a low grit sand paper? Sounds worse than it is, but that's all I can compare it to.
thanks!

We've had the same thing on and off since my LO was only a few weeks old (me's 6 m now). I was told by my Ped it was heat rash. . .but it cleared up when we went dairy free. But then came back just this week and we are still dairy free and very careful about it (of course a little something could have slipped in when eating out). So I don't know for sure. The rash itself doesn't seem to bother him, although, he does seem generally itchy and that does seem connected to his dairy sensitivity.

Please research steroids (hydrocortizone is a steroid) and side effects before using that type of cream again. I know it's OTC, and most Peds will recommend, etc. but these are extremely strong meds with strong side-effects.

Clotrimazole is not cleared for children under 3, it's an antifungal, and it should be used if specific fungus has been detected.

For skin, Weleda's Calendula cream, or California Baby's calendula (or any other calendula -allnatural-cream) is just wonderful.

Take care!

Thanks for that. I actually was very nervous and asked the ped. about it, of course he said it wasn't an issue, so I hesitantly used it and it seemed to work. I haven't used it more than once a day after her bath, but I do know of the concerns (mostly from this website).

I have never heard of Clotrimazole, but because the rash is fading and doesn't seem to bother her I don't think we will be using anything else as of now.

I will take your advice about the calendula though, funny when I asked the pharmacist at the traditional/"natural" pharmacy about other options she said there really weren't any. That's why I bought the hydrocortizone in the first place. When I voiced my concerns about the steroids she said just not to "over apply" and DD would be fine. I thought at the time, "well every baby is different so how would I know if I am over applying for mine?" I will try the calendula next time.

Thanks again!

We are pretty much dairy free over here too. We do a little yogurt every now and again, but that's about it. I know as a newborn she was very sensitive to it and developed GERD. The ped. prescribed Zantac, but luckily we didn't need to use it because cutting out dairy and soy did the trick.

I use the Weleda baby cream with calendula for diaper rash and also any skin issues--it smells so nice and really works.
I also ordered from mountainroseherbs.com a comfrey oil that has been awesome for my DS eczema and skin issues. They also make a calendula oil. Both calendula and comfrey are great natural choices for skin healing and the mountain rose herb oil is just organic herb in an olive oil base. We love it!

My daughter gets these bumps!!!
After a particularly bad episode a month or two ago, I did take her to the pediatrician just to rule out crazy things like roseola and cpox.
It's heat rash. Or it's an "irritation to something new" -- like a shirt fabric, etc. The rash doesn't bother DD at all, she doesn't notice it, and it comes and goes and doesn't spread. (And it does feel like low grid sand paper when you gently rub her belly!)

This was going to be my suggestion, it has happened to me at times. I tend to be sensitive to heat and can sometimes get a heat rash if I'm too hot, especially at night. For me, it's not associated with a fever but the outside temperature or temp of the room. I do think this happens to my DD too, could be what you're dealing with?

I think so too. She is such a sweaty head! If her head is touching my skin at all while nursing she head will be drenched. Same with the carseat, stroller everything.
