Is this thrush?

DS is 27 months, and a couple of weeks ago I started noticing a tiny bit of soreness during night nursing. Then in the last couple days it's been more noticeable, kind of mild stinging. Not super bad, but annoying. My nipples have tiny red bumps on the areolas, and it's red and shiny and a little flaky immediately around the nipples. One is worse than the other. I haven't noticed any signs in DS.
Assuming it is thrush, and since we've never had it before, can I rub some lotramin on the nips and see if that takes care of it? Would it be a problem if there was still traces of the lotramin on my nipples when he nursed (he only nurses two or three times a day at this point). Do I need to treat DS as well? Can I just try Genetian violet? What the heck is that anyway, and can you get it at a regular store/pharmacy or would I have to go to a place like Whole Foods? Should I ask the pediatrician to call in Nystatin or try the little guns first?
Thanks!

Yes you can just put the lotramin on it a couple times a day and no it won't hurt him if he gets some residual in his mouths. I have seen Drs recommend you use it IN the babies mouths. (eww)

I would feed him yogurt with active cultures and that should be enough to help him.

Hope things get better soon. I do think it sounds like thrush.
