For my birth, we used the big 300 gallon watering trough from the local feed store. We put this outside on our back deck. Inside, we filled up the 125 or 150 gallon trough. Then I had my choice of laboring inside or outside. I really liked the hard plastic sides because I could bare down with all my power. They're relatively inexpensive; a little over $100 for the little one, and maybe $200-ish for the big one. They were loaned to me by my midwife, but I'd really like to buy our own and use it for a soaking pool in the summer.
it really was super simple to put together, my husband put it together in less than an hour with no complications and it filled and heated QUICKLY! I LOVED being in nice warm water, I relaxed so much i could FEEL my servix open up and baby's head move down, it was wild! It scared me for one contraction, then I was fine and pushing after that. I love being in water anyway, a hot shower is heavenly for me!!! So water is a must have for me for birth.
I've been an assistant/apprentice at many water births and I really do NOT like having to scoop out cold water and add hot water, it's SUCH a pain and I think it's distracting to mammas too. I love that this tub has a heater and the sides are firm! THey're framed and made of heavy styrofoam, so they go together easily, the liner goes in and over the sides, so the sides are soft to the touch, but sturdy to cling to.
