Do GPs/Family Doctors Even Do GYN Work Anymore?

I've been wondering as I've not had one in 10 years that does. They always refer me to a GYN, and I'm soooo tired of visiting GYNs.

yes, my family doc will do basic stuff--pap smear, etc.

Mine will do well women visits as well.

i am rural so yes. out here the gp is usually an np, and md has a clinic visit or two a week. np and md do it all and sometimes get offended if asked for referral for something they are comfortable treating. i am so rural that there are more horse dentists than human doctors and only the vet has an x-ray. there are NO SPECIALISTS here.

My family practice doc does. I haven't seen a gyn in a long time!

Mine does. Although since my cancer diagnosis, I see my gyno-oncologist for my three times a year paps and pelvics.

My regular family physician does my annual exams. He's also our kids' ped.

I was wondering this too. I switched care from an Ob/Gyn to my current Family Practitioner when I was pg with ds. I was just thinking how I haven't had a complete physical (including Pap smear) in several years and I was wondering if my FP would do that or if I'd need to be referred to a Gyn (since I fired mine 2.5 years ago!).

With DD's pregnancy I had a FP who also did OB, this time I went to a Ped who does OB, I live in the country though which may be why the multitasking. The OB/GYNs here sucks, at least from the things I've heard.

our fp does well woman/basic gyn but not ob

Op, have you considered finding a midwife to do your well woman care? My homebirth midwife does paps and stuff and I just don't think you can beat the care you get from a midwife.

Mine does, and I had no idea until recently!

I am glad, though, because I like my general doctor so much better than any Gyno I have ever been to. My Mom had breast Cancer at my age, so I have to go for my mammogram every year. I am relieved to be able to do it at my general doctor's office instead. I trust her and I have never been able to say that about any gyno I have been to.

Ours probably would do it but I prefer to use my midwife.

Thank you, everyone for your answers!

Well, I called my doctor's office and asked about it. It turns out mine does after all, but you have to ask at the time you make the appointment. It was weird, bc during the appointment she gave me the impression she didn't (or at least didn't want to). Same happened with my old doctor too. I did have one in between the two who would at least ask if you were interested in having it done, though at the time I didn't use her for it bc I had a (horrible) GYN.

Soooo, I'll be making an appointment there for my next PAP. So glad I don't have to go anywhere else. I love my birthcenter and their midwives, but they are such a hike away (an hour). I kind of like having a "one-stop shop" for all my medical examinations.

Now, if only I could talk her into doing dental cleanings....
