science friday anyone?

Does any one want to brainstorm ways to use Science Friday as part of their science curriculum? Is any one already doing this?

Science Friday with Ira Flatow on NPR

I have been a long time fan of Sci. Friday. I knew the kids picked up on some of what I listened to, but last week my oldest sat with rapt attention listening to the piece on caterpillars that can live under water. This sparked a lot of fascinating conversations over the last week.

We have already decided to dedicate our studies on Fridays to science. Some of it will be related to Ira Flatow's show and some will not. For now we are just planing on listening and discussing what we hear. In the coming weeks, however, I would love to have some more hands on activities that correlate to the topics on SCI FRI. I know that they always say there are some lesson plans on their web site but sadly the teachers site has been down all week. So I thought I would bring the idea to you wonderful homeschoolers to see if I could tap the collective creativity here!

FYI-Currently we are using Moving Beyond the Page as a spine which has some science in it but I will soon be ordering Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding: A Science Curriculum for K-2

I was just thinking about this recently. (Oddly enough, it was during the same underwater caterpillar thing. Must have been a big hit!) I have a soon-to-be 10 year old and 8 year old that'd be the targets for this.

Have you found anything online yet that might be a guide? I haven't looked because I had a baby last month and my brain is just jello right now! But it does sound like a cool idea!

As of yet I haven't found any thing on line but I was able to see a cached version of the teacher site that Sci Fri posts lesson plans to. The site is down now but u can use it via the cache version. It looks like there lesson plans are for middle school. Some of it may be useful any way but I have not yet waded to far in to it. I am hoping we could do some brainstorming here about topics from the show and ideas to go along, as well as, science in general. Whaddya think?
