Does a toddler proof sunhat exist?

I bought one for DS that has a chin strap with velcro from Old Navy. Luckily I did not spend much on it because he rips it right off. We will be spending a lot of time outside this summer and he really needs a hat. Have you found any that your toddler will leave on or is unable to remove?

I bought the same exact hat as you!! And, DS just rips it right off. Maybe one that snaps?

I do think snaps would be better. Hopefully someone here has one that snaps and can tell us where to get one!

Toddler hats (or winter hats) do not stay on my kids. The only hat they tolerated was a) a monkey hat I found at the thrift store (OK, so it was Curious George, they didn't know that!) and b) a puppy hat found at Target. They only tolerated them because they were cute. Maybe find a hat your son WANTS to wear? But good luck - I have yet to find a sunhat for either of my kids that they don't just rip off.

It takes awhile but I just keep putting the hat back on. Eventually it does stay on. I do let my kids pick the hats too. And there are times that I use a consequence, no hat = no outside.

I just had to rub sunblock all over her head for a while, b/c my daughter wouldn't wear one either. We always brought a tent and umbrella to the beach for shade. Once they get older, they understand that they have to wear one.

Heck, we never found a *baby*-proof hat, never mind a much-more-coordinated-toddler-proof hat .

When dd1 was small my mother sent me an old fashioned bonnet. A pink, flowery one that ties at the chin (think little house on the prairie, roomy on top for air space...). I see you have a boy, but perhaps there are plain white bonnets too, or blue ones. If I put it on her correctly, it would not come off. However if the child just does not want to wear a hat at all, and tries to take them off, perhaps you could just stay mostly in the shade, or use a shade umbrella, just get creative with things that make shade?

This is exactly what I do. We live in the mountains, not wearing a sun hat is not an option, a sunburn happens VERY quickly. I put the hat back on over and over and over and over again, eventually the toddler/baby does get tired of this and it stays on. When they get a little older and can understand some then we do the no hat= no outside, my older kids know better then to attempt to test me on this now. I will have a young 1 year old this summer and am so NOT looking forward to the whole throwing hat off game yet again, heck I get tired of putting it on every 2 seconds but we are outside in the summer and he has to learn to keep it on.

Someone on MDC once posted that her kid would willing wear a construction hat, even in summer heat. So be it. We have luck with our bike helmet, and with a thin cloth tie-dyed cap ("rainbow hat"), and I'm hoping to expand our dress-up hat collection for the summer.

I just bought a hat online that ties under my son's chin, and we've been doing alright so far. He has pulled it off a few times, but then other days he doesn't even seem to notice it's there. (Guess it all depends on his mood.) Here's the link, with lots of cute designs for boys and girls:

These are super cute, and they have a couple with trucks. DS is obsessed with trucks, so maybe a truck hat would be more appealing. Hmmmm. I may try that.

My ds (15 months) will wear ball caps but not sun hats. I think he dislikes the brim all the way around and the straps under his chin. He also sees his daddy wearing ball caps, which helps.

you could remove the velcro w/ a seam ripper & sew on snaps. That is what I have done w/ both hats & bibs.

Try try again.... we started our kids on hats from the time they were tiny babies so they got used to them quickly. For the days that they would just take them off we put them back on over again. It was annoying for a few days but then they stopped taking them off.

This will probably not work for a son, depending on your style and taste.

I put large cloth sun hat on DD, and then took on of my own full sized silky scarves and TIED that hat to her head, spreading the scarf wide over the crown of the hat, tying it in a jaunty bow under the chin. Worked great, and she looked like a southern belle.

Oh I totally have done this to my son. If my choices are him looking like a beautiful little girl or getting a sunburn... there is no question in my mind.

I'm really torn on this one. Just recently, the snow here melted & it's started to get warm again. Last summer, DS was fine with the hat (He'll be 2 in July). Only occasionally would he try to take it off. Most of the time we'd just distract him & get moving & he'd forget & leave it on.

Thus far this spring, it's come off immediately every time! & skin cancer runs in my DH's family & We are pale people. I"m pretty confident he'll avoid sunburn with sun screen (we just coat his head - he's a blonde). But I'd like the complete coverage of a hat & the shade for his eyes. DH also wears a hate with a full brim to protect his ears & neck from sun (The "Tilly" hat - great hat.)

Maybe we'll have to try making a big display of putting our hats on & how great they are to entice him to mimic. Cuz otherwise he'll just keep trying to yank it off while protesting.

The only thing that works for us is letting DD choose her hat. Yes, this means having a selection of available hats, but it was worth it to me to keep her face of of the sun. I think we have 5 right now, including one with a giant T-rex (her current favorite) that is so BOY, but what can I say. I just figure that when people look at this little girl in her sparkly, pink, light up shoes, frilly pink dress, and big blue hat with a giant T-rex they just say "ah, a toddler." My only rule is that certian hats (like her cowboy one) don't go in the pool. Otherwise I say choose away small child.
