My blood pressure is too low...any ideas to get me through the weekend without add'l medical drama?

There is A LOT going on with me healthwise. A lot. I have some heart weirdness that will either require surgery or just be a benign watch-and-wait-for-years pain in the butt--I'm currently trying to sort that out.

I had high blood pressure but it has come down either with use of prednisone (for asthma but they were thinking my adrenals were causing hormonal bp issues and I was slotted for some testing) OR some recent weight loss. However, I notice that I feel so much worse now with the prednisone and my readings are even lower.

So now my BP is TOO low. Like 90/50 and I really feel it. I feel like I'm going to pass out constantly, especially when I get up. I'm dizzy. Incredibly weak. I could barely walk at the store. I have chest pain (But no heart attack, spent some time in the hospital this week with asthma and my heart was checked thoroughly).Today I was sweating and shaking and couldn't concentrate.

I was able to mitigate the worst of it with salt (a trick I learned from my endocrinologist for low carb eating). I just doused my dinner in salt. Now I'm eating olives. I feel better but not great. My bp is 90/50 even after the salt (I have no idea what it was when I felt so bad earlier- as I couldn't take it then).

I called my doc yesterday b/c I noticed it was kind of low while in the hospital (but not super low like it is now --116/65, the 65 seemed too low to me) and wondered if I needed to change the bp meds. I haven't heard back from them and probably won't until Monday.

So I gotta get through the weekend and especially tonight since the meds are still in my system. I am going to stop one of the bp meds tomorrow and just try the 1 original one for now and see how that goes (we added a second when my bp stayed high, so I am hoping just stopping one med will help). And keep eating salt.

Anyone have any other ideas/suggestions/advice? Or just hold my hand. I am NOT having a good health week.

My family tends toward low bp - my mom has had issues with passing out when my dad nagged her into switching them to a low salt diet. She self medicates w/salt. If the weather is really hot it gets worse and she starts drinking gatoraid. So, basically that's what you've been doing, it sounds like. I'd see if I could get the doc to get back to me, though - sounds like your meds are off and super low bp can be dangerous - my mom passed out and broke her nose/jaw (thank goodness she wasn't driving at the time, though!!!)

(sorry, that wasn't a lot of help )

Thanks--that is helpful.

I got up to 109/69 but am now back down to 87/57.

I'm going to get more olives. Maybe some caffeine too.

I just go for the direct route, a half teaspoon of salt in a small glass of water, and chug. Or I eat popcorn, or both.

I hope things settle down and stabilize soon!

Watch yourself getting up fast - it'll make you feel more woozy. Take it slow

Hope you're feeling better soon

When my bp gets that low and I feel dizzy, I drink Gatorade and it really helps. (It balances the electrolytes.)

Good point.

Strange thing is--I'm guessing it's more the change, the drop to 90/50 range is recent, right, with the new med? My MIL's BP dropped after surgery due to various meds she was taking immediately after, and although it was now in the normal/healthy range, it was a lot lower than she was used to.

And I know it's not great, but my BP is normally 90/60 or thereabouts, and I'm not dizzy.

Not helpful, exactly, but yeah, the dizzy thing is no fun. Good point the PP made about being really slow and gradual getting up, moving around, like that.

And more long-term, DH's blood pressure comes down with supplemental magnesium, and my weird erratic heartbeat turned normal when I started supp-ing mag. You may not want to start paying around this weekend, like you need another variable to mess with right now, but longer term, maybe something to look into.

I've read that Gatorade's pretty high in potassium though. I've not tried it myself, but if more sodium is helping, supplemental potassium may do the opposite. Maybe a careful mix of both may help, but the potassium is something to consider.

I actually do take magnesium. And low bp is kind of individual. I am not feeling so hot at 90/50, but someone else may be just fine.

I got a hold of a relative who is an RN and went through it with her. Which was helpful. My bp is low for sure but...

I may have also been hypoglycemic too as I avoid carbs due to all the hormonal hijinks in my body that makes any sugar, even healthy sugars, bad for me (although I had 20-30 carb grams in me before dinner). Also, maybe I should not have gone to the store and tried to walk around so soon? I am still wheezing a bit.

At dinner, I did immediately eat some bread with butter and lots of salt just to cover myself. The food did not make me feel better as fast as it usually does when I have low blood sugar (which with low carb, if I don't eat, I do get low).

But I am taking high doses of prednisone. 60mg for like 2 weeks now and that screws with blood sugar. And I have 2-3 weeks more to go.

So I ate more olives. Some pickles. Drank the brine (sour!) and then had 8 jelly beans for the sugar. I ate 2 caffeine mints. That has to cover the bases, right?

Tomorrow, I'm not taking any BP meds. I will monitor my blood pressure and see if maybe I don't need them. If it gets high, I'll add the one med back in and definitely get in touch with my doc asap on Monday. The doc did say I may be on the cusp of not needing BP meds with my recent weight loss, assuming no underlying hormonal issue. We were kind of waiting and seeing, which is why I called to alert her to what is a super low diastolic for me while I was in the hospital.

Of course, the prednisone will muck up all the weight loss at least temporarily.

Thank you for all the replies.

I have chronic low bp. the last reading at the docs was 72/60 - yikes! It really helps when I remember to drink lots of fluid.

I used to use licorice root (in tea) when salt didn't suffice, but if you have other heart problems, I don't know if I would go that route without talking to a doctor. My problem was low bp, low blood volume, CFIDS, nothing directly heart related (and a lot of mine was iron deficiency anemia).

Well I heard back from my pcp. They said to stop one med. 1/2 the dose on the other but then go to the ER if my BP stays low.

What????

That seems dumb. I don't want to go to the ER!!!! WTH???

So I'm not taking anything. I'm monitoring my BP. If it goes high, I'll do the 1/2 dose but I am not taking ANYTHING without first seeing some high BP numbers. I want empirical data to work on, I don't want to guess. So far my BP has been 90/60 and I've had some 100/70 readings without any meds.

Did you know that low BP can cause organ damage? NOT regular old low bp where you feel fine, but the kind where you don't feel so hot. I don't feel so hot.

Well I'm not woozy or lightheaded at least, but I still have chest pain. I'm starting to wonder if this really part of the heart weirdness they found on my last ER visit last week. Crappity crap. I can't believe this is happening to me.

And I am still wheezing with asthma. This is a nightmare.
