Why do ALL the baby potties have a lip at the front?

I suppose this is to prevent spray for when boys sit on them, but why do even the pink potties have this feature?

I'm having a girl in July and want to EC from the get-go. I will probably use a clear tupperware type container at first, but none of the toddler potties I see get me excited. Why does a potty need the lip at the front? I'm afraid a little girl might sit down wrong and hurt herself on it.

Some girls need that lip because that's the direction their pee shoots.

the baby bjorn potties have a little "bump" in the front, it's smooth, but it kind of helps them sit up.

My DD can clear the lip.

I have the Baby Bjorn with the removable bowl, and you can put it on backward to the lip is at their back. DS put it on backward one day and peed on the floor. I made sure to teach him which way to put the bowl on after that.

My dd hit the floor way more often than my ds ever has.

Um, because your little boy might just want a pink potty?

We have a green BBLP and DD does just fine. And yes, sometimes she needs the lip. Baby girls pee is so unpredictable! Sometimes peeing her in the sink, she can hit the mirror, the faucet, AND the little overflow hole in the back. It's crazy!

What I want to know is why the little lip isn't extendable. Lina almost peed into her food today because of overspray while getting a snack on the potty.

Because little girls can pee straight out just as often as little boys can. Both of my girls are front shooters. It's not so bad when they just have to pee a little... but when it's an emergency, it often overshoots the toilet seat and hits the floor. *sigh* This goes for my 7-year-old AND my 22-month-old (they both use the big potty with no seat inserts or anything.) I guess it's just the way some girls are built.

I would even wager that this could be more of a problem for some girls, because at least a boy can eventually learn to point his penis down. What can a girl do when she shoots straight out?

I understand there's some hip tilting involved.

Word. You will want the lip. The lip is your friend. You will wish the lip extended over your baby's head.

My dd has learned that she has to lean forward while on the potty (even on the big potty--for a while she could reliably shoot a huge stream of pee right between the seat and the bowl)! But we had some spectacular messes in the process...

Thanks for all your responses. I guess it's obvious that mine was a noob mom question.

No, it's cool, so many people make a huge deal about spraying boys and us poor moms of girl fountains are left behind.

It is kind of cute when a soon-to-be mama of a boy asks about boys spraying, it's like "that hose you can aim!"

Lean forward... not just on the potty but also important when peeing outside. Unless you like peeing on your pants.

My little shorty figured out pretty quick how to clear the lip on the ikea potties but the Elmo potty has a removable lip. I have only regretted once or twice that I didn't put it on!

Also, I do have a pink bblp & I would not buy another one if we had a boy just to avoid a pink toilet.
