In a debate Need list of ingredients from an infant formula

I became involved in a debate after the initial airing of the Jamie Oliver Show. It is my belief that many children have a predisposition for those fake food ingredients Jamie read from the chick nuggets box because those are the same sort of ingredients in the formulas. I am in pretty deep actually. It is making me sad that so many women feel they cannot breastfeed and are feeling attacked by my statements. At this point, I would like to list the ingredients in infant formula and describe how they are the same sort of thing in the frozen food Jamie was asking the lunch women to stop preparing on the first show. I have been at the computer for an hour and although I have come across many interesting sites, not one site has listed all the ingredients of many formulas, or even one. Not even the home page of enfamil. I typed in ingredients in the search box and it said 'not found' well that says a lot... but anyway I need a list of the ingredients, can anyone send me a link that has them?

Parent's Choice lists their ingredients on their website... it was just the first one to pop up on my search: http://www.parentschoiceformula.com/...gredients.aspx Just click on the type of formula on the left, and then the ingredient button on the right.

Well here is the link for Earth's Best (organic etc, but still formula).

karika, I've heard that and similar arguments before. If we recognize that infants have neurological plasticity, then what we do during infancy carries impressive weight. This is also true before birth, so what the mom eats during pregnancy might have an astounding impact on the child. (And leads into other tangents such as setting endocrine levels, feast or famine, obesity, etc).

It's a fascinating subject.

that is weird I could never get a list of ingredients... that one that you sent is not the kind most people use though, is it? I was under the impression that infant formula has HFCS in it. The one you sent does not have any sweeteners? I think I may be over my head in the debate. I am not sure which of those are preservatives... maybe I should just step out of it. thanks for the quick response. Perhaps I should delete this thread...

Karika, send the mainstream mamas to the mainstream site, they might be more likely to click on it:

http://www.parenting.com/article/Bab...rup-in-Formula

As the commentor on the article points out, HFCS is more likely to be in alternative formulas. This is then a great time to point out that the majority of formulas are cow-milk based, and the issues with that.

Also a good time to tap into the issues of HFCS containing mercury and almost certainly all of it is GMO.

None of those ingredients look like they are strictly for preservative effect to me. Everything I see there looks like it has a specific nutritional value.

Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) can double as a preservative. I think the sulfate counterions for the zinc, Mn, and Cu might have preservative effects as well but I'm not certain about that.

Beyond that, there can't be any very potent preservatives in formula because it expires an hour after you mix it.

Along the same lines, I am not surprised to see there are no sweeteners (other than lactose) because formula does not taste sweet. (It tastes disgusting.) BM is very sweet but formula is not.

lactose - milk sugar (naturally occurs in milk)
vegetable oil (palm olein, soy coconut, and high oleic sunflower oils) - fat source
whey protein concentrate - milk protein
mortierella alpina oil, crypthecodinum cohnii oil - probably the DHA/ARA sources
vitamin A palmitate, vitamin D3, vitamin E acetate, vitamin K1 - fat-soluble vitamins
thiamin hydrochloride, riboflavin, vitamin B6 hydrochloride, vitamin B12, niacinamide, folic acid, calcium pantothenate, biotin - B vitamins
ascorbic acid - vitamin C
choline chloride, inositol - lipid constituents of cell membranes
calcium carbonate, magnesium oxide, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, manganese sulfate, cupric sulfate, potassium chloride - dietary minerals
potassium citrate, potassium hydroxide - buffer to balance pH
sodium selenite - another dietary mineral
taurine - amino acid
L-carnitine - component of the lipid transport shuttle
nucleotides (adenosine 5'-monophosphate, cytidine 5'-monophosphate, disodium guanosine 5'-monophosphate, disodium uridine 5'-monophosphate) - DNA constituents

I think there are specific laws about the ingredients in infant formulas so most of the brands are basically equivalent.

i've noticed that hfcs has been removed from most formulas since i last used it (1998). however, i am allergic to coconuts, so seeing that coconut oil is in that one scares me!

looking at the enfamil lipil premium, it also contains galactoogliosaccharides. it's made up of lots of simple sugar molecules and is thought to have a prebiotic effect. the neocare i have also lists "corn syrup solids" as one of the top ingredients. corn syrup solids are dehydrated/reduced hfcs.

HFCS in formula

HFCS I'm pretty sure is in Soy formula (can't put lactose in soy formula) at about 46%. Check me on that one though.

Hfcs

Yes--soy formula
Parents Choice the first ingrediant as well as Enfimil's alternative formulas.
