We caught a pee!!

I wanted to EC last time and never got around to it, so I've been really wanting to get my butt in gear and make some catches this time... but sort of hadn't gotten around to it. Ds1 is still potty learning (and quite beligerantly lately) - he had been pretty happy to go, and I should have worked with him more while pregnant, but I was too lazy/uncomfortable. W/dd, I did late EC - started around 8 or 9 months? She was pretty much out of diapers by 2.

I'd been trying to cue Avery when he was peeing all over the place when we took off his diaper (and when he poops, too), but that was as far as i had gotten so far.

Anywho... today I decided to break out the potty and put Avery on it. The first time was something of a fail - Avery didn't seem too interested and looked really uncomfortable the way I was holding him. Soooo, later when he woke up from a pretty long snooze, I tried again with a different position... and cued him... he peed!!!

I'm so thrilled (it's exciting!!) and proud of myself for getting my butt in gear with this so early

That's awesome, Jenna! How exciting!!!

Cool!

I was successful yesterday and today too! It's so amazing to see a little baby pee and poop on the potty. Even nicer to not have a big poopy mess on their bum to clean up!

It seems that Kessa likes to wake up a bit first before peeing. If I put try to hold her too soon, she gets upset.

Have fun!

We're doing really well with EC so far. I think we have more catches than misses and she's often diaperless already. Fiona is a super clear signaller though, way easier than with DD1 who often would pee or poo with no warning at all. I think being more experienced this time helps too.

Wow ladies this is awesome!
Wer'e no completely EC'ing, but we have already started talking to her about going potty when we clearly see she is peeing/pooping.

this morning I was nursing him and he did a little poo, so i said "hold on, lets put the rest on the potty" and I took him over and put him on the little potty and talked to him about putting poo poo on and he did it!!! This is the craziest/coolest thing ever, I think. LOL totally could get addictive!

I'm giddy over this. Why didn't I do this with the other two??

great! We are also Ecing from birth and it is going great! We catch at least 1/2 of his poops and pees- maybe more! It is so cool to just teach him right from the start that when we hold him over the potty and make the cues he can eliminate. He totally gets it! A lot of times the ones we miss are more the ones in the middle of the night after nursign where dh and I are too tired to get up and potty him when we know he needs to go. But we have a pretty good rhythm down of pottying him when he wakes up, and also after nursing and we catch lots!
Still can't make the sign language sign while holding him over the potty though so so far we just do the sound cues.

Well, it's certainly not too late I'm shocked how well it's going - it's so exciting! Now, if I could just get my 2 year old to poop in the potty...

nak-
I have considered ECing a few times but have never really dug into the idea all that deeply.

Dumb question, but if you continue as they get older and start to signal to you, do they get frustrated if you are out and about and can't get to a potty? Something I've always wondered...probably a dumb question but I didn't know if say an 8-9 month old would get annoyed, upset, frustrated etc. if it wasn't a convenient time/place to EC, kwim? Do they then not want to go in their dipe at all? I was always curious and feel dumb asking

From my friends who EC - no. But they all EC part time and baby's used to the diapers, too...

Babies also get better at holding it when they get older, from what I've read...

We shall see

Oops, double post.

We were mostly full time with DD1, and she never got frustrated really. As she got better at holding it she could give us more time. We also sometimes would take her diaper off, have her pee in the diaper (while sort of holding it right under her), and then change her, if that makes sense. So she would be peeing in the diaper still but to her she was being held in the EC position over something rather than having it wrapped around her and she seemed to prefer that. It did take two people though or risk a mess. Bushes and stuff came in handy too. But even when we couldn't do any of that (long car rides for example), she never seemed overly frustrated.

ETA: Otoh, I have a friend whose son was in daycare and the daycare provider wouldn't (couldn't, really) bring him to the potty. My friend says she thinks it actually helped somewhat, because her son hated pooping (especially) in diapers and learned to hold it longer. She would often get there and he would be dry and she'd take him to the bathroom right away. He was only in daycare for up to four hours at a time so it wasn't harmful to him. He got used to the situation pretty quickly and didn't even ask to go pee until his mom got there, so he wasn't frustrated or anything either I don't think. He was about a year old at the time.

Good to know. I don't need any more frustration with car rides LOL. This one is okay with the car so far...not great, not a super hater, but my other two kids HATED the car until like 18 months old. If I had to deal with frustration over not being able to potty them as infants while driving (we are a half hour from everything!!) that would be rough.

Baby #3 does 2-3 huge poops a day. I usually catch his signals and then lay him on some open, flat prefolds and let him poop, and keep changing the prefold under him as he keeps going (because the volume is quite large LOL!!). I don't know if that's "EC" since we aren't putting him on a *potty* but we are trying to do some of that and then trying to have him associate a cue w/ it. For now we're just sorta doing it and seeing where it goes. Not sure if that's EC or not, but his poops are SOOOO big when he goes I can't imagine it is at all pleasant to have in his diaper, kwim? So we've been doing our little prefold method.

I had to share this somewhere. Fiona was getting fussy but wouldn't nurse, so I thought to try her on the potty and she had a big pee and poo. It occurred to me that she's in the same diaper now that she's been in since yesterday evening! Funny how much experience + starting from day 1 + a baby who signals more makes a difference. We started with DD1 at 3 weeks, but either she'd already stopped signaling and gotten used to going in diapers by then, or she just wasn't a signaller, because we never did this well with it. DD2 on the other hand seems to hate going in diapers and has shown clear signs of being able to hold it for short times already until we get her over her potty.

So yesterday, Avery was slightly more fussy than normal... he's a really non-fussy baby, so I'll call it a fussy day, though it was still not real fussy. anyway, he kept fussing for no real reason that I could see, so finally I stuck him on the potty and he peed! This fussing-need-to-pee thing happened 3 times yesterday! I'm so shocked! So weird that he just started. Maybe it was just coincidence? I dunno, but I'll take it!

Maya is definitely more of a signaler than DD1 was, which makes it a lot easier. However, I still miss lots and lots of pees and poos. The worst is in the night, since she's got the whole Grunting Baby Syndrome thing going on (see my other thread - it's real; Google it! lol) and she needs to go sooo bad, but can't work it out. It only happens at night really, so I'm wondering if she just can't wake up enough to poop. She's definitely a better sleeper than DD1 was, but that's not a good thing when she needs to poop and can't wake up enough to do it, because she grunts, growls and writhes for hours and then I can't sleep. When she spends that long grunting and signaling, there's no way to catch that morning poop, because if I take her before she's able to go she gets very upset, but there's no way for me to tell the difference between when she's able to go and when she's only trying to get to the point of being able to go.
