How can I start composting?

I want to start. I feel like this is the next step for us, but I'm not sure how to do it in our situation.

We live in a townhouse with no yard. We have a little strip of grass out front, and a small area out back. The area out back is where we let the dog out at night or in the morning when he needs to go but I can't walk him at the time. So he has access to that area. We have a small deck, but the kids have all of their outdoor toys on it and play there.

I'm thinking I could have some kind of small container out back, but it would need to be something the dog could not get into. Also, will it smell? I don't want the neighbors to complain since we are renting.

We plan on moving in a few months when our lease is up, and a yard is top on our list of priorities. So whatever kind of composting I start needs to be able to be moved.

Any ideas for me?

Have you considered vermiculture composting? Basically you would have worms in a tub inside your house somewhere and they eat up all the scraps! They even make tables with the worms in the center so you can watch them work. ;-)

Another vote for worms! I think they would be perfect for your space. We are hopefully going to start this soon.
