Upstate NY roll call - Page 9

My husband and I are considering a move back to upstate (I was born and raised in the Finger Lakes, went to undergrad in Rochester) with our 13 month old. We currently live in Colorado. We would like to stay with in an hour's radius of my parents, and so are narrowing our choices between Rochester and Ithaca. I am a therapist, and he is a guitar builder, and would love to be able to find a place where our careers and family can thrive! I lived in Ithaca for a few summers during college, and was in Rochester for a few years- but that was all as a young adult. Would any of you mind sharing the pro's and challenges if you live in one of these areas (specifically publics schools, property taxes, and very importantly: the community/chances to connect with others who share MDC style parenting/life philosophies....)?

Thank you in advance!

Lights in the Park: we did make it - it's always fun, my ds is six now and he liked it a lot.  12yo was less impressed.winky.gif

ETA: always get your tix ahead, because they're cheaper.

I live in Rochester and I am tempted to tell you it is WONDERFUL so I can have 1 person I know who shares MDC philosophies!  But I guess that answers part of your question.  For the others, I live in Brighton, which is just outside the City and has 1 of the best rated school systems in the country.  Ironically, we are seriously considering homeschooling, so the high taxes are likely to be a waste in our case.  By reputation, the Ithaca area is MUCH more in line with MDC, being full of Cornell liberals and hippies.  Sigh.  In all honesty, I would not be here were it not for family ties.

Yay! I just started going to the cloth diaper circle and will be attending SlingBabies. For anyone who is interested, I'm an Eats on Feets leader and I compiled a whole list of stuff going on in NY (most of it in or around Albany) for world breastfeeding week: http://www.facebook.com/#!/note.php?note_id=180300385371113 If there's something you're organizing that's not on there, send me a PM or reply here!

I've been thinking about going to Holistic Moms, what's the atmosphere like there?

and Honest Weight is awesome, we work there and get a discount. Very breastfeeding friendly too (though they did recently start selling formula, grrr) and they have a monthly cloth diapering help class run by Sonrise diapers.

I live in Marathon.  It is close to Binghamton.

My baby is just 16 months old.

I heard of the website through the magazine.  I wanted to get a subscription, and than found that there wasn't any any more.

I would LOVE to meet with other Mamas.  Anybody close?

I don't really have a favorite place, yet.  I've lived here less than a year and feel like I still don't know the area well.

I love Holistic Moms Network!  It's a great group of ladies.  We have some in-depth discussions about hot topics like vaccines, homeschooling, etc. and it's non-judgmental.  I love it.  I've never felt so free in a moms group.  Definitely worth it!

Hi- I am in Virgil, 5 minutes from Cortland, 20 from Ithaca. I have a 5yr. old son and 8 yr old daughter. Close to Marathon too! I was fairly active on this website years ago when my daughter was young, but have only recently come back...Favorite place is probably here at home (lucky to have tons of hiking trails in backyard), used to love going to Greenstar in Ithaca, but seems to have changed in past ten years to the point that it is too crowded and fairly expensive to visit on a regular basis. Love the Ithaca Farmers Market, but that to is very busy and prices on produce are much higher than here in Cortland- but they do have a much better organic selection.

What town are you in? Just outside of Utica. Moved here a week ago from Nevada.
How old are your kids? 5 1/2 month old baby girl
How did you find MDC? When I was pregnant, my mom gave me her old Mothering magazines (stacks of them) :-)
Are you interested in meeting other MDC moms? Yes!!
What's your favorite holistic place in your area? Peter's Cornucopia, although I'm hoping to find a food co-op/buying club.

Also, if any one has info on pediatricians who don't push vaccination, or Holistic pediatricians, that would be awesome!!

Shianne :-)

Just wanted to say, I was somewhat ignorant in my previous post!  There are several very active AP mothering groups (aprochester on yahoo groups http://dir.groups.yahoo.com/group/aprochester/?v=1&t=directory&ch=web&pub=groups&sec=dir&slk=81, and the rochester chapter of the holistic moms group http://hmnrochester.homewebs.com/) here that I was previously unaware of.  I am still getting to know them, and have not actually met anyone yet except on email, so I cannot completely say yet whether my sense of isolation here will be ameliorated by this discovery, but I suspect that will be the case.  So don't write Rochester off yet!

I'm so glad I found this thread!

Town: Williamstown, just outside of Camden.  We're moving there next summer.

My kid(s): My son will be 4 by the time we move, and hopefully I'll have another on the way by then.

Meeting up: Heck yes!  I definitely want to find the crunchy community in my area.

Favorite holistic place: My farm!  We're going to be selling all kids of organic (not certified) produce, meat, and honey once we get off the ground.  I'm a doula, so I'll be doing that too.  Oh, and my husband is going to be a farrier, and is looking into sewing various things to sell - he's magic with a sewing machine.  I'm also looking forward to trying out all the places others in this area listed as their faves!

OH! Let me know when you start selling. We are in Bridgeport (south of Oneida Lake) but have a family camp near camden/williamstown. We would love somewhere to buy organic up that way!
