Nicknames: Rowan = "Rosie"?

Thread Starter
I'm posting this on the pregnancy board because you ladies are the informal MDC authorities on everything name related
DD's name is Rowan Elizabeth, and her nicknames thus far have been Rowie or Row. But lately I find myself calling her "Rosie" alot, I guess it's kind of a natural variation of the "Row" sound. I kind of like it, since my sister's middle name is Rose & it reminds me of her Part of me could see it being her nickname but I'm a bit hesitant, not sure why. It goes well with her brother's name, Oliver. And maybe people would stop lecturing me that "Rowan is a boy's name". It's not, btw
Anyway, is it too different from her 'real' name to work as a nickname?

Not at all.

Our daughters have different names, but I've followed the same pattern. I use the first syllable of her name and add a "sie" to the end of it. The nickname itself sounds very little like her full name, but they are related. I also sometimes just call her by the first syllable of her name, just as you do with your daughter.

It's okay to do that with nicknames. I think "sie" is a very normal diminutive to put at the end of a little girl's name.

Richard can be Dick. Robert can be Bob. So sure, Rowan can be Rosie if you want!

I think it's a perfect nickname!

I think that it's your prerogative to nickname your child what you want. They might not keep it down the road, but at this point it's fine! But FWIW, Rosie is a very logical nickname of Rowan. RedOakMama is right that you often see the "sie" at the end of a girls nickname, with boys it's often just the "ie".

I saw this in 'new posts' and *had* to reply, even though I often just lurk. My middle daughter is Rohan (not a strong 'h' though, more similar to "Rowen"), and we always call her "Rosie". When she was tiny, she was 'Ro - ey', but it gradually changed to Rosie. My Dad recently called her Ro-ey and she got very upset; she was adamant that that is *not* her name - Rosie is!

So I guess I'm another vote that 'Rosie' is an acceptable nickname for Rohan/ Rowen/ Rowan etc.

I called my daughter Rowan too. Rowan and Rosie were both hobbits, so I say that's linked enough to count.

My daughter is Zora and I often call her Zosie, so I agree that it's a logical derivative.

I think it's a fine nickname.

Lots of times, that's just how nicknames happen... they just come. I think Rosie is a precious nickname for Rowan. Anyway~ you're her Mama you could call her Picklefeet and say it's a nn for Rowan, and nobody could say otherwise.

I think Rosie is a great nickname for Rowan!

My dog's name is Maya. I frequently call her Doolittle.

My cat's name is Squirt, and he frequently gets called Putter.

(Sorry, my kid isn't on the outside yet, so I can't tell you what will happen with her name!)

So, yeah, I think you can make a nickname whatever works for you, even if it's totally unrelated. And in this case it is somewhat related!

I think it is great!

If you really want your child to be called Rosie, maybe you could name her Rosie or Rose?

I'm a 30 year old boy called Rowan, and today a young girl at school called me Rosie as a nickname. I was a little bit surprised, but after reading this thread it seems more logical. Some of the kids call me Rowie too- when I first started teaching they called me Mr R but I'm glad it hasn't stuck.

I'm not pregnant by the way.

Lmbo! I talked to a client the other day (male) whose name is also Rowan. He told me that it is a very common boys name in Australia. My Rowan also wants to be a teacher when he grows up

You learn something new everyday! We named our Rowan after the Rowan tree, but all of our kids have a sci-fi/fantasy connection and just the other day we were talking about how we were sure there was a Rowan in SOMETHING we read or watched...So thanx!
