Where can I find a sustainable, non-mineral oil treated cutting board?

I've just started looking for one but am having a heck of a time finding one in NYC. Can anyone recommend a shop in the city, one online, or maybe just a brand that I can look into?

I am just now starting to think about getting rid of petroleum based mineral oil, but I'm not sure what to replace it with. It sounds like olive oil can become rancid and that almond and coconut oils are better for long term use. Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks!

I have never oiled any of my wooden cutting boards. I don't remember my mom ever doing it either. I never knew that they needed an oil treatment. Learn something new every day. I just wash in hot dish water with dish soap and put in the drain tray to dry. Every couple of years or more, I need to buy new ones as the glue comes apart. You might try a bamboo cutting board. http://www.totallybamboo.com/ They are sustainable and much harder that regular wooden boards. And according to the website, at least one of their styles is dishwasher safe. They do sell mineral oil to treat them. I couldn't find any information about their oil on their website but you could email them and ask.

Thanks! After much poking around I decided to just get a sustainable, locally grown US-grown FSC-certified one from the kitchen supply store in Chelsea Market treated with mineral oil as it's too much of a pain to look over hill and dale for a natural one. I will wash it a lot and retreat it with walnut oil before using it.

I did a lot of looking and it seems like if you mix 2 parts beeswax and 1 part walnut oil, that does the trick neatly instead of using a nasty petroleum byproduct (or having your cutting boards fall apart after a while ).

beeswax and jojoba works well too

This may be too late, since you found something. Or perhaps not since it's good to have at least 3 cutting boards - one for meat (if you are a meat-eater), one for stinky/spicy things like onions and chilis, and one for baking/sweets (I don't want the apples for my pie to taste like onions!).

I bought a couple of bamboo cutting boards last year and I really like them. I'm not sure if they were treated with mineral oil though. The bamboo has held up well though.
