Dentist Visit! AAACCKK!

so, dd (3) has her first dentist visit (cleaning) this week. she has ASD, so i'm not sure she'll even be able to handle much more than simply being there. that said, if she is able to handle the cleaning, does anyone know anything about what they'll be using? she is my first, and i don't remember what they did wit us as kids - i.e., is everything flourinated (sp?), everything flavored and full of dyes? if so, is there any way around it? dd doesn't tolerate gluten or soy, and i don't give her artificial dyes, preservatives, etc - do i call them and ask if any of their products contain gluten/soy, etc.?

sorry for all the sily sounding questions! i'm just realizing how complicated this might be. thanks for any advice, been there-done that. .

my ds, also allergic to soy, eggs and intolerant to dairy and wheat (among others) just had his first cleaning a few weeks ago, too. i have a wonderful relationship with his dentist as we have been going there for years with my other dc. i just took along his safe toothpaste and told the dentist to skip the red stain stuff (yuck) that is supposed to stick to the plaque and tell you where you are not brushing and to skip the flouride (this she is used to with us). it went very well. you could call ahead and warn them that you will bring along your own stuff if you do not know them well. good luck. dentist visits are generally more troubling for the mama than the kid, imo.

My two intolerant kids don't get flouride treatment, and we bring their toothpastes as well, for the cleaning. My oldest DD, with no food issues, gets all the regular stuff (what's funny is she's been the one with the cavities....).

We just went to DD's first appointment this week. She didn't have a cleaning done (just exam), but I specifically asked about what would be used in my mouth since I'm BFing. This particular dentists uses a mix of pumice and hydrogen peroxide to polish the teeth- no flavorings or anything. And he doesn't use flouride.

Just tell them what you want, and what they can/can't put in your kids mouth.

thanks so much for all your replies. i'll bring her toothpaste, and just tell them to skip the funky stuff. this visit just kind of crept up on me, being right after the holiday and all. hopefully, like one pp pointed out, it'll be tougher on me than her .
