Help with test results? And other questions... - Page 2

My DS gets constipated very easily, and the GIPro multi didn't bother him in that way. We've given up on multi's, since he doesn't handle calcium supps. I used 1/2 scoop for him (1/2 recc'ed dose for 4yo).

The b12 in the multi is virtually useless - you have to take really high doses through the digestive system to get any into your bloodstream, especially if digestion is poor. And b12 is one of those things where it's hard to do too much - just keep adding until you don't see positive impact any more. Some little ones here do several of the jarrow sublinguals a day.

Any regular bed/futon/whatever will have flame retardants. Antimony is a very common one, and it is often mixed with arsenic (since the two are very similar chemically). If that is her exposure route, you won't make much progress unless you sleep her on a surface without flame retardants, or wrap the futon in high grade plastic (works, but sucks to sleep on). I got high quality, non-offgassing foam and wool from whitelotus.net, and made DS his own bed for about $120.

Oh yeah, forgot about your reverse osmosis water - in that case, less of a priority to test your water.

For coconut - use some coconut oil if you can as well, it's the biggest bang for gut healing.

Update... and more qutestions!

So, I just found out that the balsamic vinegar that I use almost daily has a tiny little warning on it that says that it contains LEAD! Is it possible this could be the source of DD's elevated lead???

Also, we got most of our supps in the mail today, and I am for some reason hesitating/stalling/second guessing loading her up on them... I really want to know WHY this is all happening, I want to treat the cause and not the symptoms! Or - is that what I am doing? Is it an absorption issue? Gut health? Bah!!! I feel like if I go to a dr for additional guidance, I will be deemed a hypochondriac or just plain old ridiculous. But, I certainly don't want to her (or our family) to suffer anymore with her behaviors/sleeplessness/stress from lack of health.

I guess I need a little encouragement . Will she have to be on supplements for long-term, or are we just hoping to bring up her levels so that she might begin to actually eat and get these nutrients from food? I am so stressed out wondering what is wrong with her and questioning myself on how to proceed.

Thanks for listening...

P.S - Do I give her the recommended dose of zinc, or more due to her low levels?

If she's deficient and/or fighting metals, then she's not going to fight back with food alone. Give her the supps . Long term, the need for some supps may diminish or go away entirely - or they will be a simple way to support some fragile pathways in her body so she isn't full of metals and garbage as an adult.

For zinc, I'd say start with 10-15mg... (all supps combined, so check your multi, etc). Brainchild suggests you start low and then ramp up, and that worked for us.

How often do you retest your son?
How long did it take to see any tangible improvements?
Tangible improvements - about a month (less magnesium deficiency symptoms). We retested 9 months later, but it took about 5-6 months before I felt like we had made some real headway.

Thank you mamafish for continuing to answer my questions. Here is my latest:
you said to not supplement calcium while trying to up DD's mag. Will her multi or the bone broth interfere in this way?
Depends on the kid - for now, just try to give those as separate as possible from the magnesium as you can...

Update again...

DD got some blood tests done and her magnesium levels were apparently fine. Healthy range = 1.8-2.4 and she tested 2.4. The celiac panel also came back negative. I don't get it.
In the last 10 days we've taken out wheat/gluten and started supping mag, and her sleep is improving quite a bit
I sound like a complete idiot talking with her pedi about my concerns. I generally keep it to a minimum, but I get so much crap from her regarding bfing a toddler who doesn't eat well, I'm going to boil over.

A blood test for magnesium is fairly worthless - it would only tell you if she was incredibly deficient - the body maintains steady levels in the blood. What matters is how much magnesium is in her cells. And antimony & arsenic prevent cells from uptaking magnesium - so it's not the blood magnesium levels that matter. Given her symptoms, and that she's doing better with mag supplements, I'd say it's likely she's mag deficient (or the antimony/arsenic make it as if she's mag deficient - which at this stage, is the same thing. Over time you may see her mag needs drop, as she gets rid of the antimony/arsenic).

Pediatricians don't get this stuff. They just don't.
