Your school nurse may need clothes...

Not sure where to put this but this seems like the best place.

Our (elementary) public school nurse said she is always in need of clothes, including underwear. Everything must be clean/washed of course, but pants/socks/shirts that are too worn to be donated elsewhere will be appreciated by the nurse. The younger kids are supposed to have a change of clothes for accidents but some don't. Also, the older kids sometimes need a change of clothes if they fall in the mud, spill a lunch tray on themselves, etc. The nurse said people will often donate sizes 4 - 6 but never donate the bigger sized clothes.
I had never thought about giving my kids old clothes to the school nurse so I thought I'd pass it along to you all as well.

When I was in elementary school this was a big need. Many kids from my elementary school lived in the country with water wells that were full of sulphur. Our nurse would provide them a change of clothes when they arrived at school because their clothes smelled so badly.

Yup, and it's not always the nurse who collects them. My mom was an assistant school secretary and she somehow became the person you gave clothing donations to. Things happen... kids have accidents, throw up on themselves, fall/slide/divebomb into the mud, oh, the possibilities are endless.

K students are supposed to have a change of clothes, but there is only so much that can fit into a backpack and they don't keep the clothes at school; since ds takes the bus home I want him to have everything in his backpack instead of carrying it and there is no room for the clothes.

Fortunately, I am available to take in his clothes if necessary.

We've donated hats/mittens/snow pants too, so that the school has a few extra to lend out. There are always children who come ill-prepared for cold weather. Their parents can't afford proper outerwear, or don't think about sending it for recess/lunch because they drive the kids to school. Then there are the kids who forget or lose these things. It's helpful to have some extras that are clean and in good repair.

Many schools here run 'clothes closets' because the families are very poor. Any donated items are much appreciated including toiletries and pantry items. We are getting ready for summer break here in the next 4-6 weeks and the schools try to help the families as much as they can before the vacation.
