What color should I paint my schoolroom?

For fun, share your thoughts! The room is in the basement, but it's not a deep basement, so it's only about 6 steps down from ground level. There's an outside door at the top of the stairs and 2 windows so it's got some daylight. It's cement block walls and cement floor and the ceiling is open, not finished. It's clean and dry, I want to put maps and such on the walls, all their art stuff down there, some school stuff (they'll do some stuff upstairs at the kitchen table when I'm up here). I was thinking of something orange, but not sure which shade... Thinking of doing one wall sort of like a mural- green hills, a tree, clouds, etc. I'm no artist so I might just end up painting over it! I was inspired by the thread that people were showing their schoolrooms, I want a room just for the kids stuff, it has lots of shelf space and will be getting a large cabinet for all their coloring and artsy stuff. Thinking of doing that awesome gutter idea for books too! Is orange a stimulating color? BTW, I don't want red, we already have 2 red rooms.

my friend actually JUST posted this to me on FB. she was telling me about a paper she wrote about the different ways that boys and girls learn. i asked her if i could read it.

, ill see if I can dig it up for you! It was absolutely a facinating subject, they have found that boys ae more comfortable in rooms with cooler hues like light blues, and that they like them room temp around 60, girls prefer brighter colors and warmer temps. this is one of the man differences and they have applied such differences in gender ... See Moresegregated classrooms and had a lot of success, women in gender segregated classrooms were actually more likely to pursure subjects that were concidered more masculine study (like certain sciences) It was really great because so often boys are made to feel wrong because they are more active, so many mainstream classrooms seek to feminise boys so that they "behave" when really they are acting in accourdance with their natural make up. Do you know that they have performed scans on brains of babys inutero and can see huge differences in brain activity from boys to girls?
it is crazy how much nuroscience has unearthed

I have studied both interior design and psychology and there are lot of different ideas about color psychology.

Usually cooler hues like blue and green promote calm, like nature. Darker blues can be so effective as to bring about a depressed state!

Red, orange, bright yellow are known to be energetic colors.

I suppose it depends on what "feel" you want the room to have. If you have kids that tend towards hyper, I might lean to the earthy blues/greens of landscape. But if you would like a lively room that is great for playtime, then go for those reds/oranges.

Have FUN! Make sure it is a space that YOU will enjoy being in too

I love the thought of pear green with a sky blue on the upper third of the walls (or ceiling but you don't have a regular ceiling right?). I did my kitchen a sky blue and it feels cheery and calm. Our school area is a color called Sand Motif and while it's the color I did our halls and main areas, it's a little drab and unexciting.

I love the idea of an orange room, but I do tend to lean to the reds/oranges anyway.

I'd vote yellow cause it is sunny and cheery! Maybe a light orangey yellow?

Post pictures when it's done! Can't wait to see!

The color of butter, or maybe just a tiny bit brighter than that

I had a butter-colored dining room once. It was lovely in natural light.

When you said 'orange' the color that popped in my head was orange sherbert. What a lovely color. We are going with butter yellow...for me

Thanks for all that! Orange sherbet sounds nice- though it may lead to some cravings for me! My living room is butter yellow.

If you want the kids to help paint then you could do lazure painting and any imperfections might look cool. You could also have a mixture of colors that way.

This thread is timely for me. Thanks OP, I'm inspired! We're getting ready to move and I'm thinking our formal dining room may be our school room. A green and blue hue may just be perfect for us. I'm thinking something along the lines of this?

Right now ours in white with a blue floral trims, but eventually I'm going to paint it a lovely lime green that I got free from Glidden a while back.

Lazuring is what I wanted to suggest, but you had the cool link to go with the suggestion! It could easily transition into the mural on the one wall, too! In fact, the site has a Murals button at the top of the main page that takes you to some beautiful ideas! Lillian

what about lavender? such a beautiful, calming, lovely, happy color!

oh, when I was little, me and my mom painted my bedroom(I was probably 5 or something) we used sponges(like, sea sponges) and dipped them in yellow and purple paint. it looked awesome! or, you could do hand prints. or, sponges cut into different shapes?

the lazuring looks really cool too though!(reminds me of the sponging me and my mom did

I love lavender, but my oldest ds would put up a fight, way too girly in his opinion!

Well, I bought the paint. Stupid me, at Home Depot. I really hate that place but it was convenient to go there. I am so kicking myself! I chose a spicy orange type color, dragged all 3 kids to the store in the POURING rain to get the paint. It looked pretty bright when the lady showed it to me, not like the swatch, but she assured me it would dry darker like the swatch. I got it home and proceeded to cut in and I HAAAAAAAAAAAATE IT!!!!! HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT!!!! It is FLOURESCENT orange, like a highlighter, like the kind of orange spraypaint they use to mark trees they are going to cut down. UGLY! I am so mad!! It's not spicy, but the lady assured me it was indeed the paint I chose (and paid $43 for!!!). It does not resemble the swatch imo. So I let it dry overnight and this morning it was as bad as I thought. I now have to drag all the kids back to the store and it is raining EVEN HARDER, to try to get them to retint it to a darker color because there is no way in heck I am using the current color that is in that can. I will update when I get back, hopefully with a can of usable paint.

Oh no! I am so sorry it didn't turn out! Ugh ugh ugh! Hope you get a color that you like! The fluorescent orange would give me a headache for sure.

's! Hope you get the spice orange color you want!

Ha Sara, that is funny that you should say that cause I actually was on your page before I went back to Home Depot and was trying to copy your color. I wanted them to turn my highlighter Home Depot shopping cart orange into a Pumpkin Patch color, similar to your room cause I remembered seeing yours on the thread a while back about people's organized hs rooms.

Anyhow, I went back, the woman didn't seem to know quite what she was doing and she said she couldn't guarantee it, but she'd try. She added brown a couple times, they couldn't do anything more than that because it was making the paint too watery.

It looked like it was better than the highlighter orange- warmer and richer, but not the burnt orange I was going for. Didn't have any choice but to take it home.

It is seriously the color of newborn BF baby poop at about 3 days old- you know the tawny color?? Yeah, it's that. It's like I'm smearing diarrhea on the walls with a brush. Hideous. Ah well, live and learn. I'm out about $50 and can't afford another can of paint but I do have lots of leftover cans in the basement since we redecorated the entire house when we moved in 2 yrs ago. I'll see what I can come up with, but I hope to get the room done before the weekend cause my Dad is bringing the table to go in there. I'll post before and after pics, but probably not till next week. Thanks so much for all the great ideas and support- you guys ROCK!
