When to pump after a nursing session?

My 1 month old DS nurses about every 2 hrs, sometimes 1.5hrs, but that's mainly early evening during his cluster feeing phase. i've been able to pump a couple of times and that's when DH is feeding him a bottle - about 3 to 4 hours has passed before I've pumped and I was able to pump 4 to 4.5 ounces in 10 to 15 minutes.

So how long after each nursing session should I wait to pump - before my body has enough milk to make it a worthwhile pumping session and store for later use?

I pump twice a day once during her nap about 1.5 hours after she is down and 1.5 hours before she wakes again and once after bed sometime I typically get around 6-9 oz each time and I store in 3oz bunches.. She gets consisantly one 3oz bottle each evening..

early in the morning always worked best for me, right after a feeding. you're getting good hind milk that way, too...

When my daughter was that age, I would pump after her first feeding of the morning to start building up a freezer stash.

Right after the first feeding works decently for me. I usually like to wait .5 - 1 hour after nursing to get a bit more milk if it isn't in the morning, I would usually get 2-2.5oz doing it that way. It really is different for everyone though, so I would just try pumping right after a feed and see how you do.

Pump

During a nursing session I pump. I have an avent isis and use it as a single when I pump and nurse. During the session I switch so that the pump and baby touch both sides. Rarely do I pump while someone is giving a bottle--we don't bottle supplement if I am at home. This will also help build supply as both sides are emptied (as well as can be).

I find it best to do it when my breasts are pretty full. I nurse 2-3 times on a side, so usually in the morning or during/after nap time when he hasn't been on one breast for a while. I still pump on both sides even though one is full and one is relatively empty. I often have trouble getting much milk if I wait until evening because he tends to nurse a lot in the evenings. If he hasn't been nursing a ton, 1.5-2 hours after nursing I can usually get some with the pump.
