Triplets Question

I'm *sure* this has been answered here but my search didn't yield fruitful results.

Singletons and twins can be birthed vaginally. Can triplets *ever* safely be born vaginally? If so, under what circumstances?

We are considering injectibles and want to make sure we make this decision with eyes open.

Thank you!

My triplets were born via c-section, but my OB would have delivered them vaginally if I did not have previous VERTICAL c-section scar and if both A and B were vertex; he had successfully vaginally delivered 34 wk triplets 4 months prior to my delivery. From what I have researched this is rare so you may have to travel/relocate for a while for this be a viable option. Hope that helps.

There is a momma on here who homebirthed triplets

My OB would have attempted vaginal delivery if I had made it to 36 weeks and Baby A was head down, but only in the OR and she would have done an emergency section at the first hint of trouble. She was the only doctor in the hospital who would have done, though. And maybe the only one in the city.

Yes, of course they can be.

It depends strongly on your care provider, your own personal feelings about breech presentation and birth, and how well your pregnancy goes as obviously triplet pregnancy is much more statistically likely to fall to complications that necessitate early and hasty delivery.

I've read that vaginal birth of multiples is much more common in other countries and is done so there safely. Obviously, we must be mindful of the increased risks that non-cephalic presenations raise. But that's not going to help you if you're in the US. It's not likely here that you're going to just walk into your corner OB office and find someone OK with vaginal birth of triplets. It'll be hunting someone out and possibly relocating to be nearer to them.

Kathryn posts here occasionally and she gave birth at home to triplets successfully. IIRC she had a back up doctor and EMS team present.

Thank you all for your replies! I sincerely appreciate it. We are just so torn up about the decision of IVF vs. injectibles and want as much information about various pros and cons as possible. Thank you for taking time out of your busy lives to help me figure out some of the key factors which will influence our decision! It really helps to hear from mamas who have been there.

Thanks,

Jenne
