This isn't exactly about digging in the earth...not sure where else to post it though. Mods please move if it needs to be moved...thanks!

We have only one great feature in our garden (a rough, junky, abandoned, weedy city garden)...an old crabapple tree. We love it! It's got a space underneath that would be ideal for a patio with a table and chairs (it's mud now). I pruned the tree last Fall, just to cut the perimeter brances to above head height and now from underneath you can see the lovely old structural branches.

Before Christmas I had DH put up white fairy lights around the biggest branches. I wanted to leave them up there year round so we could have a lighted canopy on Summer evenings out there.

Well, our lights became squirrel fodder.

What can we put up there that will survive and not hurt the little critters? (Sorry for the novel...I LOVE that tree!)
