Is it this bad with every tooth?

DD is just turning six months old. She cut her first tooth about two weeks ago, and I can see that a second one is about to come through. Both teeth are causing a lot of fussiness and pain and sleeplessness.

Is every tooth that comes in going to be as bad as these? Or will she sort of "get used to it," and it won't hurt as bad? How long does it usually take for babies to get all their teeth?

I'm hoping I don't have to deal with months and months of this. Tell me it gets easier with subsequent teeth!

Apparently they do get used to it. Mine hasn't but she's the exception that proves the rule.

Are you medicating? I have no qualms about breaking out the pain relief when she's super fussy.

I resorted to medication today after about an hour of incessant crying. Poor kid

I remember my others being quite fussy with most of their teeth. Especially molars, I think it depends on the kid.

Thanks for the replies.

I do medicate - I use orajel and hyland's tablets, and tylenol when it gets bad. I also have Sophie the giraffe, and give her frozen washcloths and such. It's just a constant battle to stave off the fussiness, poor kid.

It totally depends on the tooth and the kid. DD1 was a nightmare for every single tooth, I think I cried tears of joy when her last molars came in. Molars are horrid for all my kids BTW. After the first couple, DD2 wasn't that bad. I could always tell she was teething, and she would wake up more often while teething, but it was tolerable, except for the molars again. DS is 11 months and has been teething for the past two weeks, so far he seems to be taking DD1's path of handling teething poorly. Did I mention how tired I am?

This!

DD is normally a good sleeper, and I've gotten spoiled. Now it's fussy days and constant waking at night. No one in the house is getting ANY sleep. I feel like I'm losing my mind!

Can I expect to have a break for a little while this second tooth is in? Although I can't decide what's better: getting a break or just getting it all over with as soon as possible.

DD was a wreck for almost 2 years, the kid was a perpetual teether. Every tooth just sucked. We had to medicate her, she just cried, it would turn her from happy to miserable in minutes.

DS has been weird, he teethed at 3-4 months and then nothing. His tooth popped up a few weeks ago with zero fussiness and crying, so strange.

I have no previous experience as our first DS is only 5 months. He has been teething on & off, but no teeth yet.

I do want to put out there that some folks have said (as well as our pediatrician) that Orajel is not recommended due to numbing the throat and therefore the gag reflex. I've been using Hylands teething gel and Camillia as well. I find Hylands works better on my LO.

For us, the first two teeth were the worst.
After that - no problem!
The molars did cause bleeding which scared me at first (cause watching blood run out of your childs mouth is scary!) - but that was only cause he cut the top ones in first and the they cut into the bottom gums during that time as the bottom ones were coming in close behind! He didn't seem bothered by this though!

For both DD1 and DS the first 4 were the worst. After those came in there was some minor discomfort and fussiness, but nothing like the first 4.

If it's really bad you can give both tylenol and ibuprofen syrup. A dose of each alternately every three hours is the only thing that helps when she's super miserable.

Have you tried homeopathic remedy?

Me? I have, some sort of teething powder. They didn't work which isn't really surprising as homeopathy is just expensive water (or powder).

My DS is a horrible teether. And, he started later (9 months) so he gets them 2 at a time. It's a horrible week each time. I tried teething drops and, like a PP said, it's basically fancy water with his pain. I have NO qualms about tylenol and advil. I try to do the tylenol during the day and only use the advil at night (so we get a little sleep)

Horrible teether here too! Half a dose of motrin at night worked just fine!
