chronic toddler diarrhea

Hello,
We EC'ed with #3 with much success and she was out of diapers including nighttime (short of illness) by 14 mo.

dd #4 is now 21 mo and although she knows what to do on the potty no problem, she has issues with chronic toddler diarrhea (which has no real "fix" until she grows out of it). I am due in a few months and I'm guessing that we are just going to have to be OK with keeping her in diapers? It isn't as if she would have a regular miss, kwim?

Has anyone successfully dealt with this?

Does your dd always have diareah? Is it runny with no warning or does she have warning? How many times a day? Does she ever make it to the toilet with diareah?
Answers to these questions will help me (and others) know exactly what you are dealing with. What you describe as diareah might be something different to someone else. Ykwim?

dd goes through periods of diareah such as when she is teething or eats too much fruit. Ds3 goes through it as well but he is able to make it to the toilet although the wiping or lack thereof can make a huge mess. dd is 15 months and has been in undies full time during the day since 7 months. She wears the tiny undies from the ec store and they are tight around the legs and it keeps the poop in (even w/ diareah). During periods of diareah if I have had enough she goes into pull up trainers w/ aplix on the side then when I am brave again back into the undies.

Have you had your daughter tested for Celiac disease. Most doctors haven't even heard of it and won't test for it unless pushed.

My little niece was diagnosed just before she turned 2 after my sister insisted it wasn't just "toddler diarrhea," but something more serious. It's really not that rare a disease...it affects 1 out of 133 people. My son was just diagnosed and we've noticed a world of difference.

Hi Nicole!

I second the thought that "chronic toddler diarrhea" is as much a diagnosis as saying "chronic high fever." Celiac is more common than many people-- and doctors!-- think. But so too are food allergies. If you haven't already visited the allergy forum, you might think about doing so.
