I noticed last Friday when I picked DS up from daycare that his hair was damp and it smelled funny (I can't describe how it smelled, it was just off). He had just woken up from a nap. So I wrote it off as sweat. But all weekend I have noticed him digging in his ear. And I have noticed small amounts of yellowish-clearish gooey discharge. Only once has he come close to complaining. He asked for "tooth candy" (which is what we call Hyland's teething tablets). He has been sleeping like normal and has not run a fever. But when he wakes up from sleep (in the morning or after naps) his hair is gross and crusted with drainage. I have been treating at home with olive oil/tea tree oil drops. He had a virus or possibly a seasonal allergy issue of some sort about a week ago (low fever--about 101, vomited once, snotty nose and watery eyes--nothing to get too excited about). Anyway, his hair was gross and crusty after nap again today, so I know it's been draining for about 4 days. I called the doctor tonight and we have an appt. with the nurse practitioner after work. I'm kind of worried that b/c she's not a doc and not who he regularly sees that she'll just automatically put him on abx. I mean, if he needs abx, he needs them... but without the fever and pain... how do you know if abx is necessary? When would you start treating with abx?

P.S. I am absolutely convinced that this is not related to dairy issues. DS is VERY RARELY sick, and this is the first time for a true ear problem (just b4 he turned one, the doc diagnosed him with an ear infection, but I'm not convinced that's what it really was... he had been running a highish fever that was not responding to tylenol/ib profin and we admitted him to the hospital a few days later with pnuemonia... so I don't think he ever had an ear issue then). Other than the pnuemonia, he's had two colds in his whole life... and that's it for him as far as being sick. He's a very healhty kid and if this were a food alergy/intolerance issue, I think that we would have been dealing with a lot more sickness by this point in the game.
