cursive- start or wait?

Melissa wants to learn cursive. I held off this school year with it because I wanted to be sure we got her reversals issues with printing fixed first (mostly done, but she'll have issues for a while probably because she's dyslexic) Anyway, I have the HWT first cursive book already hanging around (given to me by a fellow hs'er) and was thinking that when we start her new LA program here next month maybe that I'd start her with cursive. She tries to copy my writing every chance she gets to swipe my shopping list or something I'm writing, but is having issues with doing it on her own. She'll be in 2nd grade when we finish up this school year in May. So should I start her with cursive or wait another year or so?

go for it! it might even help with her reversals as it's harder to reverse cursive letters

My dd was on fire to get into cursive... turns out she really just wanted to be able to write her name. We haven't really worked handwriting (which is obvious) but her cursive name is getting quite impressive.

That's what I keep hearing, and the biggest reason (other than her wanting to learn cursive) that I'm seriously considering it. I think I will start it when we start SL LA 1 here in the next month or so, and just see how it goes.

Another vote to start- and it should really be useful with the reversals issue.

Yeah, another vote on that. Many folks actually recommend starting with cursive first anyway, and one of the main reasons is that it eliminates reversals in the first place.

OK great, she has one more week left of her current phonics program after tomorrow, so we'll start with cursive after next week. She's dyslexic, hopefully cursive is a bit easier for her than printing.
