swaddle making baby too hot

My son is three months old today. The temp here is getting warmer, and tonight it is quite warm in the house. Previous to today, he has always slept in a swaddle (at night, day naps are taken on my lap) but tonight before bed and before the swaddle, he was fussy and I figured out it was due to him being hot. His skin was very warm and clammy, so I took off his clothes, and he seemed much happier.

Well, he won't sleep unless he's swaddled because when I nurse him to sleep, and get up to move him, the swaddle helps him not wake up, but tonight he woke up before I could move him because he was too hot in it and was sweaty again.

I'm sure a lot of you mommas have gone through something like this, so what did you do to deal with it? Co-sleeping is a slight option, I've done it before, but its so uncomfortable because I can't sleep fully relaxed and I have to stay on my side the whole night because the bed is not against a wall and I'm scared he'll fall off. I would like suggestions that don't involve co-sleeping. TIA

Well I swaddle and co-sleep, but that is neither here nor there...as you can see, I live in Costa Rica. It is HOT here, REALLY hot. We swaddle dd in a diaper with an old twin sheet that has been cut in half. They are fairly low thread count well washed and worn sheets, so they breathe great. She still wakes up a wee bit sweaty, but not bad, and sometimes, if we have a cool mountain breeze blowing through the valley I wrap a thicker receiving blanket around her.

So maybe start by swaddling in the diaper and your usual swaddle and then if that is still too hot using a lighter weight swaddle material.

What are you using to swaddle? Does your babe just flail arms or is it legs too? Just the other day I figured out that I can swaddle just his arms with a much smaller blanket - since my guy only flails his arms, it's easier for those warm nights. But even full swaddling, we use an A&A swaddling blanket, which is really light-weight and most of the time he doesn't get overheated, even though I keep the bedroom around 70. If it's warm, I just strip him to his dipe before I swaddle, like the pp.

Have you tried swaddling in muslin? It's very lightweight and breathable.

Another vote for Aden & Anais muslin blankets here, over nothing but a diaper. Very breathable.

If arms-only swaddling will work for your baby, that is also a good option. We did arms-only on my DD from about 3 months to 5 months just because her legs wouldn't fit it the miracle blanket (too tall!)

I only swaddle at nap time, it's part of his "signal" that it is sleepy time. We use the muslins because they are lightweight, and quite large, so easy to swaddle him in. I don't swaddle his arms, he wants to suck his thumb. and he often grabs a tail of the muslin like a lovey, which is fine, as it is so light I don't worry about him smothering with it.

if he ever doesn't need the swaddle, a&a also makes sleep sacks out of the muslin.

I've never heard of muslin blankets I'll look into them and in the mean time try to find a lighter weight blanket that I already have, and also strip him down to his diaper and swaddle that way if need be. Thanks for the suggestions! I have a few ideas to play with now.

I had never heard of A &A before so I checked it out and admittedly their prints are really cute, and 44$ for four swaddles seems like an okay deal for the fashionable ones, but...

You could make four of them, slightly larger even, for 6 dollars if you bought the fabric here: http://www.fabric.com/ProductDetail....7-e8de53bfae8d

I'm just saying.

they sell them at target too, for less than 44$. I think they 2 ply instead of 4 and the prints aren't as cute.
