We have two beautiful kids, a doeling and a buckling.. VERY CUTE! ALL went well I had to help pull the doeling who was coming out backwards with only one foot presenting but all went well! I have so many questions now though!! DO you check often the first night? How soon do they join the rest of the goats?

I bring the kids into the cabin for the first 72 hours, and mama gets to come in and nurse several times a day. I don't feel comfortable leaving them outdoors unsupervised together, especially in a herd situation. Somewhere around the 4th day I let them out together during the day if the weather is nice enough. Then when they're a week old, I leave them out together 24/7 until they're two weeks old. Then I separate them from mama and wean them onto a bottle. In my experience, leaving the kids on mama makes for difficult to impossible weaning later. And leaving tiny kids with mama is very risky.

We keep them totally separated for at least two full days, and after that let them join the flock under supervision, for limited time, to get out in fresh air and sunshine. For several days this goes on, until I see the kids acting unlike newborns--lots of jumping, kicking, climbing, etc. For a week or more, they are locked in a maternity pen at night--for safety's sake.

That's assuming a good bond. When the bond isn't there, then even Mom and kids need supervision together. In those cases, lots of supervised visits, as close to around the clock as possible.

First night, it can be hard to not just curl up and sleep at their side.

My dh brought one of our kids into the house this evening. For a visit. They are impossible not to love.
