hypertension

We are applying for insurance (individual policy, dh is self employed). Because we haven't had coverage for a while, we had to get physicals. We were shocked to find my dh's blood pressure was high, in the 140/90 range. He had his mom check it just a few months ago, and it was on the low side of normal just like it's always been. We did go recheck it at the machine by the pharmacy a couple days later to make sure it wasn't white coat syndrome, and it was still high.

He is only 30, we eat a reasonably healthy diet, no red meat, no alcohol, no caffeine, no smoking, lots of greens, other vegetables and fruits. He is not overweight. He drinks a ton of water. He takes a multi vitamin and fish oil supplement. He has celiac disease and avoids all gluten; we rarely eat out and can't eat most packaged convenience foods because of the gluten. He takes a martial arts class usually 3 times a week, so he gets plenty of regular exercise. We do buy full fat dairy products, except for 2% milk. I'm a nursing mama trying to hang on to the few pounds I have!

So, what can we do to help this? He lives most of the typical lifestyle recommendations already. We'll get the results from the bloodwork and urinalysis we had done at the physicals today or tomorrow. Maybe something will show up there, I'm just really concerned that there is a big problem here and we're going to be denied coverage.

Cut out sodium, sometimes that helps. Sometimes it doesn't, but it's worth a try. Not everyone is salt sensitive.

Maybe consider increasing the frequency and intensity of exercise to see if he can 'train' his way out of hypertension by better conditioning his heart.

Also, in something like 10% of cases, hypertension can be hormonal in origin. So he may need a hormonal work up and given how healthy he is, I would push to get this done so you know for sure.

It could be hereditary. The good news is, blood pressure medication is cheap and effective.

DH needs more magnesium than most people, supp-ing 2x/day (no idea how that varies person-to-person) makes his BP go down. Anyone else in your DH's family have high BP? Runs in DH's family, I think they all need/use more mag than the average person.

The Calcium Lie links interesting stuff with high BP, it's DH's family health history. And not at all mine.

Oh yeah, definitely try some mag too.
