Anyone know anything about him? A friend of mine is really into him, but I can't find much about him on the internet... I don't want to waste my time reading his book if it's worthless...

I am reading one of his books right now and am being challenged by it (I like it). I don't know if all of his books are this way, but the one I am reading is definitely very Christian. Alot about how we view our lifestyle and what it reflects to our kids and what sort of worldview we are raising them to have...

http://web.me.com/voddieb/vbm/home.html has some clips of a Dr. Voddie Baucham Jr. sermons. Is it the same guy?

(And no, I hadn't heard of him before this thread.)

Does he talk about spanking (particularly with some sort of a tool)? Because I am not interested in that if he does....

Yes, that is him. When I google, I get a lot about spanking in general, but I want to see what he says about using "tools". Ick.

He is a conservative pastor connected with Vision Forum (I don't know how strongly). If you don't like them or their style (leans towards patriarchalism), you probably won't like him.

His daughter shows up in my blog hopping often (me being a conservative Christian). She's like me 10 years ago. . They seem like a sweet family and he seems like a very affable and loving man, but I haven't gotten into his teachings and all so I have no clue what he has to say about discipline. With the VF connection, I'd guess spanking is in there somewhere.

Is the VF connected to Bill Gotthard?

I don't remember if he has mentioned spanking or not, but that is not the basis of his ideas. The book I am reading he clearly says that he is not about to outline particular discipline techniques, and he talks about following ephesians where it says not to exasperate your child. He does strongly advocate first time obedience, but I haven't read enough to know if he says "how" to get there or not.

I grew up in a Christian home but really feel challenged by a lot of his ideas. He's very into the idea of having family worship time and about as parents taking responsibility for our childrens' spiritual upbringing - not expecting the children's and youth pastors at churches to do it but as parents WE do it. He's happy to be a homeschooling dad and he also challenges the idea of the way Christianity has embraced birth control.

So anyway, there are a few things.

Not as far as I know. They are just another super-conservative Christian publishing house/group.

Probably people who use BG materials would appreciate many of the books and resources VF puts out, but that's the only connection that I know of.

I know the Baucham's have adopted, which apparently violates one of the major rules Bill Gothard has.

Yes. Those are the ideas I heard in the few sermons I listened to. I've not heard anything specifically about discipline. But I've not dug for it either.

He also has one on the issue of race in Christianity, and that combined with him being an African American conservative piqued my interest, since we are a conservative Christian bi-racial family and that makes us a bit of an oddity.
