Losing words?

Is it commom for a baby to be saying a word, then stop? DD can say about 20 words, but a few that she used to say, she won't anymore. They were very clear words before. You'd hold up the ball and she'd say ball, and now she doesn't.

I don't know if it's normal. But my dd has done the same thing (blue and ball) were two she said and then lost now blue is back. What I did was put a list of words she says on my fridge to remind me to use them each day. Like I used to have of foods she had been introduced to. My dd is 18 months. How about yours?

It comes and goes from what they say. My grandmother said because kids up to a certain age are learning everything they see and hear by rote memory the things they already know come and go as they grow. It's still there it's just not at the front of their mind. I saw a different interpretation here once that sometimes a kid's consciousness is in things like talking or motor skills development and sometimes their consciousness is being diverted to a physical growth spurt. That's just two people I've heard mention something similar to what you're saying.
Is it comming and going in spurts? Or is this the first time you've noticed it? Do you think something might be wrong? Or just curious?

DD is 12.5 mo and this happened a while it ago. It was some of her first words that she had been saying at 9mo then stopped at 10mo ish. It was ball and sheep (sheesh). She has been trying to say ceiling fan (see see da) and it was so cute, now she won't do it for the past couple days.

I had seen a post that implied it was related to getting vaxs. I don't feel that is the case though. I'm not worried, just perplexed. I was thinking it was like you say hableme, that she started working on other things and forgot how to say it. I think I will make a list so I can notice if it happens more.

My 15 month old has had words come and go, then reappear, then disappear again. Nothing to worry about, her big sis did it too. (Now I can't get DD1 to be quite for a second, so I know DD2's words will come back, too!)

When something else is happening in one area, they tend to regress in another area. DD2 has 2 huge molars coming in and gets really snotty-nosed when she's teething, so some words have taken a back seat. They'll resurface, I'm sure!

What is cause for concern is when there is a significant drop in language use IN GENERAL, not a particular word. So if a child was able to use 30 words or so, then regressed and is now only able to use 5 words or under (and stayed this way over time), you would want that checked out. Doesn't sound at all like what you're talking about.

Normal!
