what one book would you want with you and why.

Note for those of you who will answer the Bible, please specify one book of the Bible and tell why. I think this will make the discussion more interesting.

My book is Paul's letter to the Romans. Paul constantly inspires and challenges me in my faith. I am sure I could read this book over and over and learn something new about myself, my faith and my God everytime.

The Homeric Hymns

actually after further thought I think I'd want the Oxford Classical Dictionary.

The Stand by Stephen King. I think I've read that book at least 15 times so far, and I still find new things in it. That book always keeps me thinking and challenges me. I just love it!

I would pick Lord of the Rings but I would have to find a copy where all three were published together in one book.

A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. I re-read it every year. It's my touchstone. I realized how much it meant to me when I loaned it out---and couldn't get it back!!! Wish I could offer up something more exotic

The Princess Bride
that's a hard one.

i probably would have to say homer's odyssy. or the iliad and the odyssey in one book, if that's out there. or a giant tomb of greek mythology that includes both of the above and many other things!!!!!

and hopefully if it was the only book i had i would learn how to spell it correctly too:

odyssey!!!

AmandasMom and Astrid-
LOTR would be my second choice and The Stand would be my third choice.

Both are books that I could read over and over and never get tired of and learn something new everytime. They both have a permenant place on my nightstand, just waiting for me to grab them and read them again.

The Complete Tales & Poems of Winnie-The-Pooh because ds loves all the pooh bear stories, and if i was stranded on a deserted island chances are that he would be with me.

Too Loud A Solitude by Bohumil Hrabil

It would just seem appropriate.

Maybe The Four Agreements by Miguel Ruiz.

Maybe I wouldn't bring a book at all. Seems like a waste, since I'm deserted. I'd rather bring a water distiller.

Herbal Guide to Native Desert Plants and Shrubs. or Edible Plants and shrubs in a Desert Environment.
If I was being practical I would go with mountain mom and say an herbal guide.
However, I am not feeling practical so I will choose
The Fifth Sacred Thing by Starhawk
or anything by Tom Robbins

The Phantom Tollbooth. Love, love, love it. I use it to put me to sleep when I'm having insomnia attacks.

Incidentally, isleta, I'm currently reading Love in the Time of Cholera.

My kids baby books. (I'll bind them together) I know that this kind of answer was not the intent of your question but it was the first thing that popped into my mind.
