The stomach virus that just won't quit...

DS is on day 8 of some nasty stomach bug. He's been throwing up and having diarrhea off and on over the past week. He refuses to drink Pedialyte, but is drinking water and some white grape juice. Last night he ate some chicken soup and a couple of crackers and has kept them down so far, but I'm anticipating it won't be for too much longer.

When I called the ped's office and talked to the nurse he told me that we just need to watch for signs of dehydration and let the virus run it's course.

He is super picky about what he will eat and drink, which is making this difficult. I'm sending DH to the store for some coconut water, but I'm not too sure DS will even drink it. On top of that I think he's holding in his bm...

Any suggestions on what to offer him to feel better? I'm running out of ideas here.

have you tired all the different flavors of pedialyte? What about the non-flavored one. It looks like water, I suspect it tastes like water too. My one year old had that bug back in december, and it held on for 3 WEEKS! But he would drink the grape pedialyte like it was going out of style. I was going through almost a bottle a day (especially when his brother caught it, but his only last for a few days) The poor kid couldnt drink anything but pedialyte, becuase that was the only thing that didnt go right through him! He lost a whole pound during that bug, it was AWFUL!

Another thing that both my kids REALLY liked when they had tummy bugs were white or brown rice cooked in chicken broth. My husband liked it too when HE caught the poopy bug.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm asking DH to pick up a couple different flavors of pedialyte right now. And I'll try cooking the rice in chicken broth, too. I really hope this passes soon...

Forgot to offer to you and your little guy. I think I hate it when they are sick more then myself.

I just went through 10 days of this myself and what saved the day was upping my probitooics to about 20 billion organisms.

Is your son taking a probio? You can buy the powder and mix it into his beverage.

Thank you. I got some probiotics into him yesterday and will again today. He seems better this morning... hoping he continues to keep his breakfast down throughout the day!

OMGosh, day 8! I'm on day 3 and I hope it's waning! I was so stressed out yesterday when I realized he hadn't eated anything for 30 hours. Now it's closer to 50. He's managing to keep down bits of water and diluted apple juice and I've nursed him a few times, but refuses anything else. I feel so bad for him, he's just sleeping and any time he's awake he's just dragging himself around. I have lost count of how many loads of laundry I've done in the last 3 days...it's coming out of both ends, poor guy.

((hugs)) to any/all mamas going through this right now! It's the first time he's been sick and it's awful!
