SPD/anxiety? Looking for mamas going through the same thing

Anybody else dealing with this?

My son (D), 4, is a former preemie (27 weeker). He has a twin with PDD/hyperlexia (C).

D has always had sensory "quirks," but over the last year things have become markedly worse. Initially, we attributed a lot to his constipation, but even when that's under control we're still seeing major behavioral issues.

Example: tantruming at transitions, consistently and repeatedly. Some days every ten minutes. Some days I can't offer anything, like an idea or an explanation, without him screaming at me. If I miss a turn when we're driving somewhere and have to turn around, he freaks. Other days are calmer.

His diet is extremely restricted. He eats McDonald's chicken nuggets and shoestring fries, white bread, pretzels, and chocolate chip cookies. Sometimes pizza or a Pop Tart.

Lately bedtime has just been a nightmare, with him fighting us until he collapses from exhaustion. Toileting is also rough--some days he'll go, some days he holds it. Number two he always holds, but holding number one is a new and upsetting behavior.

Sensory issues are numerous--he gets distracted by his eyelashes, to the point he's trying to pull them out. Hates baths, but also hates getting his hands dirty, won't wear "crunchy" pants, etc. Your usual stuff.

So anyway. Between this and my other son and all of *his* needs, I'm feeling kind of shaken up. We have always planned on homeschooling, but I'm feeling so overwhelmed at this point...

D just completed three out of four evaluations--he needs a full PT eval. But he qualified for OT and the psych/social showed definite red flags, and she's going to recommend SEIT services and/or social work.

We have a great CPSE chair. Getting services if we homeschool won't be a problem, and I'm making a date to tour their sensory facilities (so many OTs don't use a sensory approach, and that's what works for us). In addition, there is a 12:1:2 classroom for anxiety/ED (HATE that label) kids with a social worker in the classroom full time, and there'd be a great classroom there for C too. We're going to tour all of these places in the near future.

I don't know what I'm looking for here--mamas who are going through something similar, or hugs, or if you think you have something germane to offer...thanks

Hello!

My 13 year old DD has PDD-NOS and has huge sensory issues as part of that. Transitions were super hard for her when she was little. They gradually got much easier, though she still has a harder time with then than her peers.

We homeschooled for many years and my DD goes to school now. Mothering doesn't host debates on this sensitive topic, but I love my DD being in school. She needs people besides me to interact with her daily, and I need the break. Homeschooling a SN really isn't like homeschooling a typical child. Because my DD can't hold up her end of a conversation, no one in the homeschooling community ever tried to connect with her. It got really old for me. School has been wonderful for her. The staff really care about her and work with her.

I've posted about my DD and anxiety here before...she's 4.5 and has SPD and a speech delay (articulation only). I've always talked about her challenges in terms of anxiety, although I'm not sure that's the bottom line. Or if it even matters. She definitely has transition issues, inflexibility, and anxiety, and social challenges. I don't have much concrete info to offer, but wanted to let you know I'm in a similar place with school. We had planned to send DD to a small, private Montessori school, but they've closed. There are NO other alternative education options in our rural area. I'm seriously considering homeschool, although I'm not sure it's the best avenue for us. I have serious issues with public school and I'm not sure the private schools are in a position to support DD's challenges. So, yeah.
I'm here to listen. again.
