So we're trying to narrow down our list of names, but we keep adding more.
Name in question for the day:

Echo Lee

Boy name, or girl name, or both? What is the first thought that comes to mind? Obviously the spelling of Lee could be changed to be either masculin or feminin.

Vote in the poll, and feel free to leave comments about your other opinions on the name. Thank you thank you!!!

Echo, to me, could only be a girl name.

Echo, to me... is a dolphin. :/

I voted either. I think how you spell Lee would determine it for me. My initial reaction to Echo is that it is a boy's name but everyone else has said girl so I guess I'm out of touch on that one! I've never met an Echo before but think it's a lovely name. Would you call the child Echo Lee or just Echo (with Lee as a middle name?) I like it both ways, but prefer it with both names.

Great name!!
From the way the name sounds, I think it could go either way, boy or girl. However, Echo is a goddess from Greek mythology, so I'd have a hard time using it for a boy.

I didn't vote as I think it would be a hard name for either gender. Generally girls do better with unique names than boys do though, so if I had to vote I'd say girl name. Just seems pretty teasable - whenever she says anything, some kids will repeat it (an echo). Would get really old for a kid to deal with.

And although I love Leigh for a middle name for a girl, I don't like it with Echo as it reminds me of e coli when said or read together.

Also depends on what your dd's name is.

Are there other names you are considering? Do you know if you are having a boy or a girl?

I think of Mr. Echo from Lost, so it says boy to me.

I like it for a boy or a girl and I think it is lovely. And FWIW, most of my children have unusual names (nature names and such) and have never been teased about it. We have always told the kids if someone teases them it is because 1. they want to be friends but don't know how or 2. that the person teasing them may feel badly about themselves and it is best to be extra nice to them.

Also, my daughters both have names that were originally boys names long ago and 2 of my boys have names that my dad thought were too feminine-so really, imo, I think the most important thing is if the name feels right for the child.

I love Echo (for a girl) but despise Lee (rhymes with see). It's my middle name, my mom's middle name and my sister's middle name and it's just yuck.

Okay, OP here. Since I've gotten some replies I'll go ahead and divulge some more information.

My DD's name is Lyric Elise. Since she was about 1 I've LOVED the name Echo and wanted it for a future DD. It goes with Lyric well, without being too 'theme-y'. When I got pregnant with this little one my girls name I had picked out was not Echo. For some reason it just wasn't the babies name. We recently found out this baby is to be a boy and have long forgotten the name Echo. We have a long list of names, all that we love but all that have one thing or another that's 'wrong' with them. Last night DP said, "hey, what about Echo." I paused. For a long time. I had never thought of Echo as a boys name, but somehow it fit. There is a male Echo on Lost and so I know it is used for boys (even though the popularity chart shows NO boys with the name).

If we chose this name for a boy we will have two middle names. The full name would be Echo Lee Fletcher. Lee because it's a family name, Fletcher because we love it (but not for a first name) and I think it adds masculinity to the name. We haven't decide if Lee will be a contraction of the first name, or simply a second middle name. (ETA: we originally wanted the middle name to be Leo as this child will be a leo and we love the name. But Echo Leo is out for obvious reasons....lol.)

So there you have it. I'll share the rest of my list later if anyone is interested, but this thread was mostly to discuss this name. We need to start either vetoing names, or deciding to keep them as top contenders. Our list is overwhelming right now.

The Lost character is Eko, not Echo, btw. But that's probably not a dealbreaker.
Good luck with your decision, and congrats!

Echo was an extremely feminine nymph in old legend, and she's one that's often painted and spoken of in stories, poetry, and historical reference. I couldn't wrap my head around a male "Echo," especially since Echo was a nymph of Diana, the maiden goddess. Doesn't get much more feminine than that!

I would agree with those who referenced Greek mythology. As soon as I saw the name, I thought "girl" because of knowing about the nymph.
I know you have a whole name thought out, but maybe it could be a middle name? That way, he doesn't have to share it if he doesn't want to.

Echo Lee? First thing I think of is E. coli.

To be honest, I don't like it at all. Yes, it also makes me think of the Greek myth (girl), but that was not a story with a happy ending.

But look at the meaning. Is that what you want your kid's name to signify? Someone incapable of original thought, always repeating what others say? Not something I would pick.

It sounds very feminine to me.

To me: Echo can be either.

Lee - boy
Lea - girl
Leigh - girl

BOOOO to the naysayers with negative comments on the name!
It is a GREAT name. I think it should be left un-hyphenated, but that is just my opinion.
To me it sounds really feminine, especially paired with Lee because that is also a unisex name. How about Leo for the first name? I love Leo

Well, I have almost posted this exact thing more than once today.

So I'll just .

BUT, you are the one whose opinions matters. I'm sure there are people who think my kids' names aren't great.
