Elderly cats and the flood 'o pee in my house, HELP!

We have two Siamese cats, a 17 year old male and a 16 year old female.

The female has been diabetic for some time and she gets 2x daily insulin shots. Both cats eat a high protein, diabetic formula cat food. We take them for regular check up and the female has her sugar levels checked regularly. (There is no expense spared for their health care.)

Over the past year or so, we started to notice urine accidents outside the box. We attributed it to their age and odd habit of perching on top of the box edges and peeing while on tippy toe instead of actually climbing into the box and standing and urinating on the litter. We took to putting down puddle pads under the boxes and that took care of the stray pee problem.

Recently, we are having an absolute piss-fest. I know for sure that the female is peeing on the floor beside the boxes as I have seen her do it but the volume can’t just be from one cat, even a diabetic one, so I am thinking the male is also going outside the box.

Nothing has changed with their litter area, same location (large, quiet, private, isolated) same style of box, same litter. We clean the three boxes twice a day. I doubt mobility is a problem as they have no problem racing around the house, up and down the stairs and jumping up on the beds.

They both go to the vet tomorrow morning. In the meantime, I am posting to ask for advice/guidance:
  • Any suggestions on how best to control the pee smell? There litter area is on a large piece of linoleum, which is on top of carpet. Their favorite elimination spot seems to be close to the edge and then the pee rolls on to the carpet. The house smells horrible.
  • Assuming any medical issues are addressed and corrected, any suggestions for getting them back to the boxes?

We are at a loss as we never had a problem with their potty habits, aside from the over-shooting-the-box thing and that was minor.

We made our own litter boxes out of rubbermaid/sterilite totes. Like on this web site:
http://www.catinfo.org/litterbox.htm
(scroll about halfway down)
Our kitty loves it and I never have to worry about her missing the box.
If I had to re-train our kitty, I'd confine her to a bathroom and use Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract litter. http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.as...1#BVRRWidgetID
Also, remember not to clean the litterboxes "too much"...cats are clean animals, but they do want some of their scent in the box (and no perfume-y or cleanser smells)
I hope there is nothing serious going on...sometimes litter box probs can be either physical or emotional issues.
Best wishes to you and your furry friends.

We had our vet visit yesterday and she said they are both in fantastic shape for their age. Both are getting blood work ups. I would able to capture two urine samples from the diabetic one and am awaiting those results.

We use clumping litter so it isn't necessarily "clean" as the scent is still in there and on the sides of the boxes. I am going to look into the attracting litter.

Right now we use piddle pads under and around the boxes but the female cat still manages to pee right next too but not on the pads. I could try bath mats, that would be easy to wash and replace.

Thanks for the links, off to do research!

I have used the big plastic tote boxes as well.No issues with pee over the side.Only problem would be for a fat cat or sickly cat that can not jump into the box.
