April Swine Flu/H1N1 Vaccine thread

Thread Starter
This article in BusinessWeek magazine, Did 'Regular' Flu Shot Up Risks for H1N1 Flu?, concludes -

Quote:
"...the World Health Organization has recommended that protection against pandemic swine flu be included in future seasonal flu vaccines. This will provide direct protection against pandemic swine flu and eliminate any risk that may have been due to the 2009 seasonal vaccine, which did not include protection against swine flu."
What does that even mean?

Editing to say that this article has an even more confusing juxtaposition of statements --

Quote:
"If the findings from these studies are accurate, they raise important questions about the biological interactions between pre-existing and novel pandemic influenza strains, researchers say.

Study authors note that the World Health Organization has recommended that H1N1 be included in subsequent seasonal vaccine formulations. This will provide direct protection against H1N1 and thereby obviate any risk that might have been due to the seasonal vaccine in 2009, which did not include H1N1."
If there are potential INTERACTIONS among the flu strains, WTH would we want to put them into the SAME VACCINATION??

or am I just missing something really obvious here?

Please remember that this thread is for vaccine issues. Disease specific discussion such as treatment, spread or prevention other than vaccines should be placed in our Health & Healing forum.

Please also remember that any news/current event discussions must remain focused on the general vaccine related issue in this forum & should not focus on any specific individual.

As Georgia explained in our forum announcement:

Due to the volume of H1N1/Swine flu threads, we ask that you please read and post to the existing threads and not start a new thread at this time. Please post to the existing threads so that we can help everyone access the information in a limited number of threads for organization's sake. It is becoming increasingly difficult for members and moderators to keep track due to volume when a new thread on the same topic is started each day. If you have searched through the existing threads and not found the answer to your specific question/information, please note this in your post to an existing thread so that participants know that you have searched and are still coming up short. From the Vaccination forum stickied thread:

New members are advised to research the topic of their question first by perusing the archives and doing specific searches. Your questions are welcome and we certainly know a busy parent has little time for focused research and that the archives and search results can be overwhelming to sift through. But sometimes the info you seek is already posted and just what you're looking for. If you have searched the forum and did not find an answer, please say that in your post so that the members appreciate that you have already done so.

Thank you so much for your cooperation with helping keep the volume contained and the forum organized! New threads started will be closed at the moderators' discretion or merged with an existing thread. We understand the importance of this topic and want everyone to have an opportunity to find the information they need. Please PM a moderator with any further questions.

Wow, talk about ... ugh, morning brain is failing me... the word for copying word for word.

Many journalists these days are lazy. The articles don't make any sense because the journalists don't understand the subject matter and are just typing word for word what they read in other places and change a few words to make it "clean." (I tutored a high school student who did that unabashedly and could not understand why I objected).

And these journalists are the ones "shaping the public mind" - at least the public who can't think for themselves. Yay.

Is there still a swine flu thread?

Because i have some news to post to it...

The researchers found that seasonal flu vaccination was associated with a 68 percent increased risk of getting swine flu.

I like this spin:

Quote:
"To date, public officials said that nearly half a million San Franciscans have been vaccinated - that's almost half the city. That has helped avoid the pandemic that the government warned might cause up to 90,000 deaths in the United States."
We prevented tens of thousands of imaginary deaths!

Give me a break.

What I've found interesting is how many people are recommended to get the H1N1 shot...now! Even people who had presumed H1N1 back in the fall. I know someone who had two flu-type illnesses (one presumed H1N1, one probably seasonal flu) who had the H1N1 flu mist about six weeks ago. The other person probably didn't even remember having the flu (or, that his entire household save for him actually had it in fall).

This marketing campaign is crazy, but especially giving shots to people who should still have immunity. I also find it hard to understand that people are falling for this.

I too encountered several people who went ahead and received the vax even after having had the flu. I remember one mom in particular that I met at my ds' soccer game last fall said that her dd had had a lab confirmed case of swine flu and that the doc said that she needed the vax to protect her from the "second wave" of swine flu that was going to hit in the winter. And this woman is a nurse! I assumed she knew a little about natural immunity but apparently she followed the docs advice and took her dd to wait 6 hours in line at the mall to receive the H1N1 vax.

Don't laugh! We all got a pretty bad flu in November, and I was told over and over to still get the vaccine for myself and my family. There was so much pressure I almost did, but then common sense prevailed. I kind of wish I had a test taken to see if I am immune so I could tell people to leave us alone, we already had the darn h1n1 flu.
