How long does meat last in the freezer?

I'm not sure if this belongs here, but if it needs moved that's fine

We are considering switching from vegetarian to an omnivorous diet if we can get local ethically raised grass fed meat (which I believe I've found a source for ). My question is if we buy a large amount at once, how long does it stay good in the freezer?

According to conventional wisdom, or in actuality?

I believe conventional wisdom is 12 mos in a deep freeze, but in actuality, it will still be edible for years... not very tasty maybe, but still edible.

A solid year, at least, and I've eaten meat out of the freezer that was upwards of 2-3 yrs old and it was fine (deer... it gets lost down there sometimes, an then your digging for something else and go... 'oh look, more deer... wait! this says 2006/2007?!?! CRAP! Guess I know whats for dinner now...'
