crocheted tampons?

i actually had an idea for cloth tampons a few months back when my diva cup starting real hurting. a few cycles later and i have decided to ditch the diva for awhile, so i started searching for cloth pads. (i used sea pearls briefly and loved them...til i read a post here that reminded me that sponges were actually animals. the poster said she refused to stick a "dead animal up her yoni") anyway, i like the internal protection idea, and starting prototyping washable tampons, but never went anywhere with it.

now i'm finding stuff all over the web. etsy has a listing for a pattern and a european site sells them already crocheted.

anyone try them? i'm really interested!

also, check out this tampon cozy. how cute is that?!

OMG, I should NOT have looked at the link. Just reminded me of something my step mother made for my dad when I was younger and it looked just like THAT but was for keeping his umm, manly bits warm. At least thats what she told me. 20 years later I'm still traumatized

Hey there!

Yep, I've crocheted my own tampons. I used them for swimming since, until recently, I only used cloth pads (I moved to a diva cup last cycle).

Anywho. I found a pattern online on craftster.org (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=178151.0)... I made a couple like this one but I eventually made my own pattern that was an empty tube with a string that could be 'stuffed' with a small piece of rolled cloth. I found they were more comfortable and more absorbent then the ones I made with the pattern from craftster.

I'm pretty paranoid about TSS so I only used the crocheted tampon for when I was swimming. I didn't dilly-dally about removing it afterwards.

Hope that helps. Let me know if I can be of any other help.

I've made my own, but I don't use a pattern. They're very easy. I leave a good sized "tail" (this will be your pull string), then make a rectangle, crochet the first chain a long as you want the tampon to be, then proceed making it wider, make it almost as wide as it is long, then finish and cut the string off about a foot long, and at the opposite corner as the starter string. Then to use, simply roll up, and wrap the long string around it to hold it together, tuck it in at the base, and viola, tampon. Then it unrolls for washing. They get very clean. The only problem is the strings tangle together in the wash, but if someone can find a way to get around that, it work work really well.

Sounds neat...I'll have to give it a try.

Are you wanting to make one yourself? and are you wanting crocheted ones only??

I have been looking at these for a while and they seem to look really nice.

Just thought I would share!

i wouldnt make them myself, i think i would get them off etsy.

i wonder...whats wrong with just cutting a washcloth to size, whip stitching the edges and stuffing it up there? seriously!

I suppose that could work... so long as you leave yourself a tail to pull it out with and don't leave it in for too long. Its really not any different then crocheting them.

Well, for me anyway, I can crochet a 2" x 3" rectangle faster than stitching up the edges of the washcloth. Just me though .
