Name question: how do you pronounce this? - Page 2

Just talked to my friend & got the pronunciation she had intended: "ahn". She said it has been causing problems because nobody knows how to pronounce it and it never occurred to her that people wouldn't know. They picked "anne" instead of "an" at the end because they thought it looked more feminine.

Being a mom with an unusual name and having a son to whom I gave an unusal name (to English speakers...my name is NOT pronounced Malik and my son's is not pronounced Aidan), I am especially sensitive to this issue. I have no problem telling someone how to pronounce my or my son's name (even a couple times!), but nothing gets my goat more than unsolicited name advice. I can't tell you how many people told me I needed to change my son's name, which had special meaning and importance to us (as it is Turkish as mine is, and my father is 1/2 Turkish) instead of opening their minds and thinking beyond their own limited world view. And trust me, the people who couldn't take 2 seconds to process a relatively easy pronunciation weren't really people I cared to associate with anyway.

Whew, I guess I went off on a little tangent there! Lol my whole point was to say just ask! Which you already did and I'm glad you now know how to pronounce it
