Vaginal Breech Birth Considered Safer than Cesarean in Canada

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada issued new guidelines this week calling for doctors to no longer automatically schedule moms for c-sections of their baby is positioned to enter the birth canal buttocks or feet first. They say a reassessment of earlier trials shows that babies and mothers do not suffer worse outcomes in vaginal breech births than those who opt for c-sections.

All right USA, it is time to step up and start acknowledging actual research rather than maintaining this completely ridiculous status quo.

That is fantastic news!! I know several women who "had to have a c-section" cause their baby was breech. Its just ridiculous!

I guess the real risk is using a provider who isn't skilled in breech deliveries. So if you are having a breech baby, you'd want to get a caregiver who is comfortable assisting in a breech birth, even if it means changing caregivers.

Yes, & it's time for Australia to recognise this as well. The cesarean rate here is just out of control, on par with the US I think.

I had a breech homebirth--I think it was generally a more painful birth experience but it went fine. I didn't tear either, and it was a first birth, 8.6 pound baby.

Exactly, and in some places there are NO providers who have any experience with breech births. So messed up!
